"Pieces Of Eight" as written by and Dennis De Young....
It's six o'clock
Good morning sounds are everywhere
The warmth of spring, a gentle breeze blows through my hair

I hurry through my life never stopping to see
How beautiful it was meant to be

I'm just a prisoner in a king's disguise
Broken dreams as we shuffle by

It's six o'clock it's quitting time I'm done for the day
Out on the streets I overheard a lady say
We now have everything or so people say
But now this emptiness haunts me every day
We seek the lion's share never knowing why
Come alive spread your wings and fly

Pieces of eight
The search for the money tree
Don't cash your freedoms in for gold
Pieces of eight
Can't buy you everything
Don't let it turn your heart to stone

General CommentI'm the first person to comment on this song? how on earth... This song is great. i love the keyboard/bass solo in the middle of the song.
anyways... a piece of 8 was the nickname for a piece of currency in the spanish empire used for several centuries around the world. i think the song is about how people shouldn't trust "get-rich quick" schemes, as they tend to fail, and instead should simply be content with what they have. i have a feeling that i'm wrong, so if anyone has an interpretation they're more sure about, feel free to correct me.

Song MeaningThis song has many embedded metaphors which relates to the hardships that King Carolous the III experienced when he bet his entire Spanish kingdom on these Pieces of Eight coins he had minted to flood the Spanish territories we now call the United States. His ship was either pirated or was lost to storms at sea and because of this tragic event the King was forced to sell the territories tot he French who later flipped the property to the United States and the rest is history. When the King bet everything the country had on a place that wasn't his own. He lost his sense of freedom and was trapped inside his kingdom, with guilt and embarrassment. Check out the coin online 1783 8 Reales Coin. All these coins were found as shipwreck coins and wre legal tender in American territories until 1857 as a dollar. Google that.

My Interpretationit's about not being ruled by money- allowing the accumulation of "wealth" keep you from the true treasures of life.
"i hurry through my life never stopping to see how beautiful it was meant to be"- busy acquiring more money but missing out on life w/ family, friends..
"i'm just a prisoner in a kings disguise"- trapped by the need to acquire more, but at a cost..
you're rich but not happy- fame and fortune but not being w/ those you love. as you try to get more.; giving up what "you" want to do and doing what others direct you to do to achieve those money goals. (the search for the money tree)
