This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
You must have felt not good enough or strong and pushed too much. Maybe you ust couldn't tkae much more of the names they roar try to ignore, ignore.
I heard the new at 7:30. In the morning she called me crying. She asked me why, why did he do it? That how he went through it all alone, alone.
Maybe there was no reason for you to fight. Maybe there was just something did you even try? Try. You thought you couldn't take another day living in this world. Goodbye to life.
When you said goodbye i heard you say it for the last time. I didn't know you. I didn't know you. As you said goodbye, did you say it for the last time? I didn't know you, I didn't know you'd die.
I didn't know you'd die.
I didn't know you'd die.
I heard the new at 7:30. In the morning she called me crying. She asked me why, why did he do it? That how he went through it all alone, alone.

I didn't know you'd die.
I didn't know you'd die.
