"Burning My Soul" as written by and Michael/myung Portnoy....
A thorn in my side
A chip on my shoulder
A lump in my throat
The size of a boulder
The chill up my spine
Can't get any colder
And you wonder why I can't smile

A knot in my gut
An ape on my back
In the heat of the moment
I'm knocked off the track
You drop the ball
I pick up the slack
And you ask me why my hair's gray

Twisting, turning
Losing all sense of yearning
Living and learning
The pressure keeps on
Burning my soul (burning my soul)
Burning my soul (burning my soul)
Burning my soul (burning my soul)

I say it's green
And then you tell me it's red
Keep your thoughts and ideas
Locked inside of your head
We've got someone
Who can think for you instead
And he sounds just like the last one

Twisting, turning
Losing all sense of yearning
Living and learning
The pressure keeps on
Burning my soul (burning my soul)
Burning my soul (burning my soul)
Burning my soul (burning my soul)
Burning my soul (burning my soul)
Burning my soul

Responsible thinkers
Throw caution to the wind
But I find myself
Speaking from within
I can't live my life
Walking on eggshells
To stay on your good side

Using your words
Controlling my life
Can't you see it's my words
That gives you your life
So I hurt your feelings
Well I'm really sorry
But I don't give a shit, no

Twisting, turning
Losing all sense of yearning
Living and learning
The pressure keeps on
Burning my soul (burning my soul) [Repeat: x7]

General CommentThe music in this song is so badass. I hadn't really listened to Falling into Infinity much, but I got the Live in Tokyo/5 Years in a LIVEtime dvd and always was like, "wth, I've never heard this song before o_O" and like half the other stuff on the 5 Years part XD, as well as The Silent Man even though I listened to Awake a lot at that time, just probably not that song. My whole Dream Theater thing happened back in late July this year and I had downloaded all of their albums already (almost) and was obsessed with I&W (I still am, it's my favorite still so far.), now I'm just getting around to finally letting everything sink in because I've also started with other bands, too (Opeth, dredg, Modest Mouse, ELP, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Porcupine Tree, The Cure and some other stuff) Recently I pretty much got everything I could want right now so I'm gonna stop buying music all the time and just let everything sink in whenever it feels like it, hehe. about the song, well, I think it is kind of obvious o.o

    Well, that's my life story =) o.O

*runs off to go finish listening to Falling into Infinity all the way through for the first time*

Oh yeah, I let my little step brother have my burned copy of Once in a LIVEtime and a bunch of other stuff I actually *bought* now. He got through the first few tracks on the first disc and his reaction was pretty much, " DREAM THEATER. HOLY SHIT. OMGPLKJDFJ|RAWR|AKJS/spaz *drool*"

    o___________O

It's okay, just smile and nod your head. >_>

General CommentI love the opening baseline, it just has the funkiest beat. Totally underrated, both the song and the album.

General CommentThis is one of those songs that I hated at first, but after I let it grow on me I fell in love with it.

General CommentSo this is about DT's struggle with their producers or something? I could look on the DT forums and post it here but it doesnt matter.
    Great song either way.

General CommentSocial and academic pressures are the main causes of stress. This song is a rant-and-relieve song.

General CommentCool song, like most from Infinity I wasn't too keen toward it at first, but it grew on me. I like the bass. I always thought it was "I see it's green and you tell me it's red." as opposed to "I say it's green and you tell me it's red." I 'see' it's green to me makes more sense because it's as if the person knows that someone is lying to their face and they're calling the other person out, whereas if it were I 'say' it's green, it would be like they believe that someone is lying to them yet they're unsure.

General CommentRage, and individuals who bring it. It seems like this song is one gigantic rant against particular people who know just how to press your buttons in a way that makes you upset. These same people are ones who don't understand that they are doing wrong, or at least they pretend not to. Mike Portnoy could have written this in response to the record producers once again, but it could also be about others that bother him. We all have people like this in our lives.

General CommentGreat song, but this one part gets me:

    "We've got someone
Who can think for you instead
And he sounds just like the last one"

What could they mean by that?
