i break the silence with my voice
and everyone turns round
to see the source of all the noise
and here i stand
it's not as though i mean to upset you
with the things i say and do
i should know better, but i said so anyway

it's easier to play a part
and read your lines
than freely speak what's in your heart
and in your mind
is it me who says these things that so offend you?
ain't appropriate aloud
i'd say i'm sorry
but it's hard to speak with both feet in my mouth

all hail the king of dunces
you best hold on, i'm opening up my mouth
bring out the may pole
and tie me up and shut me out
devil knows what possessed me
to shoot my arrow straight into the sky
send me to the mast and hoist me up and hang me high

i put no blame on you
i brought this all upon myself
it's just this thing i do
at times like this i wish i was someone else

well there's a lever inside my head
between my mouth and my brain
keeps me from hearing what i've said
till it's too late, now it's too late
smear my lips with vaseline
cuz i'm a vocal libertine
i try explaing but then
even i'm not quite sure what i mean

all hail the king of dunces
you best hold on, i'm opening up my mouth
bring out the may pole
and tie me up and shut me out
devil knows what possessed me
to shoot my arrow straight into the sky
send me to the mast and hoist me up and hang me high

i put no blame on you
i brought this all upon myself
it's just this thing i do
at times like this i wish i was someone else

i don't know what to say
i was only trying to make you smile
and bring some meaning levity
to your world for a while
i never meant to make you cry
but i did it all by myself
it's just this thing i do
at times like this i wish i was someone else

all hail the king of dunces
you best hold on, i'm opening up my mouth
bring out the may pole
and tie me up and shut me out
devil knows what possessed me
to shoot my arrow straight into the sky
send me to the mast and hoist me up and hang me high

all hail the king of fools
your boys been bad, lets keep him after school
send me to the black board
and write a hundred times i am a dunce
devil knows what possessed me
to shut my mind and open up my mouth
send me to the anchor
and watch me drown in myself

General CommentThis is the ultimate appolagie song if you're in a relationship and did something wrong. (even if you're not quite sure what)

General CommentIt isn't really an apology song, I don't think. I think it's more about not having a backbone. He says he'll apologize to anything, as if he isn't willing to stand up for himself. I get the feeling he's made to feel sorry for things that are either trivial or not his fault.

My InterpretationThis song is about how people are hostile when others try to express their opinion.

It starts with how the singer makes a comment, and everyone is shocked by it. He then says that it's "easier to play a part", to just conform and ignore your own feelings. But once you express an opinion you've already messed up with that.

He then goes on to say he can't keep himself from speaking his mind, and that he doesn't know why he can't. He submits to punishment, thinking it must be the answer.

Following this, he changes to saying he can't just say nothing. He needs to speak, and once he does then he realizes he said something "wrong". Afterward he can't explain his opinion. He blames himself for all of this.

Before the song repeats, he gives an example of something he's said. He was trying to lighten up the mood with a joke, but he just makes things worse for the person he's trying to make smile.
