"Idiot Summer" as written by and Robin/valenzuela Wilson....
I walked home to the sun
I couldn't ride another one
I thought a lot along the lines
And I've been fooled about all night
Wiped clean always by midnight
Wasn't it like an idiot summer
Three, four peaks all I could see
In the morning it's a hundred and ten degrees
But I like the goddamn heat
I lie awake half the night
Autumn is coming it seems like it's in sight
All the autumn that you can see
All the autumn that you can see
It's growing darker like the trees

But if all the trees should fall
All the bugs would crawl in my sleep
And then it's cold
It's growing darker like the trees
But if all the trees should fall
All the bugs would crawl in my sleep
And then it's cold
There's no telling I was so confused
I try but I can't help you choose
Tucson is so far away
I lie awake half the night
Autumn is coming it seems like it's in sight
Wasn't it like an idiot summer

General CommentThis is my fav Gin Blossoms song along with Found Out About You. It reminds me of Wayne's World 2 during the scene they play it while Wayne and Garth are playing street hockey..

As for the actual meaning of the song I am stumped but I want to think it's a play on the term Indian Summer.

General CommentThis song has local references to the Gin Blossoms' hometown of Tempe, Arizona in it.

Four Peaks is a local mountain. It is also the name of the brew pub next door to Robin Wilson's recording studio in Tempe.

It does get 110 degrees here in the summer, almost every day. It's sort of a joke that "autumn is coming" because we really don't have autumn in Southern Arizona. It just gets cooler - down to 80 or 90 degrees, maybe.

I don't know about the bugs crawling, maybe it refers to trying to sleep in the heat and lying awake because it's so hot.

Tucson is about 2 hours away; I think the part about trying to help someone choose could refer to a summer decision of whether to go to college in Tempe (Arizona State University) or Tucson (University of Arizona). Both are college towns.

Finally, I think a lot of Arizonans think summer here is "idiot"...we have a love/hate relationship with it. "I like the goddam heat..."
    Hope this helps!
