"Golden Country" as written by and Gary Richrath....
Golden country your face is so red
With all of your money your poor can be fed
You strut around and you flirt with disaster
Never really carin' just what comes after
Well your blacks are dyin' but your back is still turned
And your freaks are cryin' but your back is still turned
You better stop your hidin' or your country will burn
The time has come for you my friend
To all this ugliness we must put an end
Before we leave we must make a stand

Mortgage people you crawl to your homes
Your security lies in your bed of white foam
You act concerned but then why turn away
When a lady was raped on your doorstep today
Well your blacks are cryin' but your back is still turned
And your freaks are dyin' but your back is still turned
You better stop your hidin' or your country will burn
The time has come for you my friend
To all this ugliness we must put an end
Before we leave we must make a stand, oh yeah

Golden country your face is so red
With all of your money your poor can be fed
You strut around and you flirt with disaster
Never really carin' just what comes after
Well your blacks are dyin' but your back is still turned
And your freaks are cryin' but your back is still turned
You better stop your hidin' or your country will burn
The time has come for you my friend
To all this ugliness we must put an end
Before we leave we must make a stand

Before we leave we must make a stand

General CommentThis is a great song about the golden country aka The United States of America. The song implies how embaressed we are as a country because equality is still not here and there remain many problems, fears, and selfishness. Our backs are turned agains these problems in shame and we need to fix them or we won't be a golden country anymore.

General Commenti think its about the problems in america during Vietnam. they state how america is suffering because of the war. blacks are dying and if you know your history they were highly "involved" in the war. and since alot of funds are going to the war people are suffering. its about vietnam

General CommentBrilliant this song is just brilliant. so full of meaning. I agree with Inoticethings. The United States "Golden Country" is supposed to be a country of equality and equal opportunity, but it's not. The 'golden country' isn't really quite so golden. I'm not entirely sure if it's talking to the country as a whole or just the government when they say "Golden country your face is so red, With all of your money your poor can be fed, You strut around and you flirt with disaster, Never really carin' just what comes after." It speaks about the ignorance of our country and the selfishness. It takes on the attitude, that people don't care about one another, they only care about themselves. "With all of your money the poor can be fed" Rich people have more than enough money to live comfortably, many have money lying around in bank accounts that will never even be touched, yet they choose to ignore the millions of people that could desperately use even just ten dollars. Many choose to believe there is no world outside the cushy one that money brings them. Ignorance.
"You act concerned but then why turn away, When a lady was raped on your doorstep today, Well your blacks are cryin' but your back is still turned, And your freaks are dyin' but your back is still turned, You better stop your hidin or your country will burn" I believe this part is talking about the government. They act as though they are concerned about the people and issues struggling in our country, but when it comes right down to it, it's all about money and power. They will just hide out in hopes that all their problems and responsibilities will just go away and take care of themselves, so they can get back to focusing on themselves.
Finally it goes to "The time has come for you my friend, To all this ugliness we must put an end, Before we leave we must make a stand, oh yeah......" We must fight to stop the injustice. Stand up for what is right and try to stop the ignorance, carelessness, and selfishness. and realize that you (as in one person) is not the center of the universe.

    General CommentGentle Ladies and Sirs,

as a 51 year old german i first of all want to thank you all.
I could hardly understand the text when listening to the music. That was getting much better when reading (thanks for) the lyrics. Your comments (thanks) made me even better understand the contents of the song (which is still not forgotten).
Nowadays a movie can be found on Internet and i want to add these informations.

In a concert the singer Kevin Cronin introduces the song with these words:

    well i never forget
we wrote this song back when we were living on campus down at the university of illinois in champaign and
i remeber the day i had the television on as i watched
that last marine helicopter as it lifted of over saigon
and that was pretty much the end of the vietnam war
and if i remember thinking to myself back then that this is it
this war we have lost over 50000 young men and women
100000s of young men and women were injured
there is people living on the streets today
who have faught in vietnam and do not have a home to live in
and i remember thinking that war is over men
we have proven that war does not work
    so
    here we are
    in the 21st century
    we got soldiers
brave young men and women over the seas
fighting for our freedom so that we can be here tonight rockin and rollin
    god love everyone of em
so we sing this song tonight with the hope that war will end when this one* is over
and that all our brothers and sisters will come back alive
and we can get down to the business for taking care of the problems right here at home and turn ours own country back into the golden country ...
