This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

just fyi this song was origanally written by the yardbirds (which page, beck, and clapton were all a part of at one time) then in the middle of the yardbirds tour the band broke up cept page and he had to keep touring so he hired people to be in his band and Pete Townshend (lead guitarist of The Who) said that the band "will go down like a led zeppelin" meaning that the band wont make it far in the music career and the band decided to take Led Zeppelin as their name.
Just fyi this song was written by Jake Holmes, covered by the Yardbirds and stolen by Led Zeppelin. Of course zeppelins version sounds the best though.
i don't think it was "stolen." jake holmes toured with the yardbirds. i'm sure holmes had an appreciation for the fact that page was so moved by his work. by the time page re-made it yet again, it's obvious that it became almost an entirely different entity. which is why led zeppelin has a separate claim to the song.
