In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
If it weren't for those lofty currents you're riding on
You would not exist
If it weren't for the flashlight shining in my face
Maybe I could resist
I think I'm hyper enough as it is
I think I'm hyper enough as it is
I think I'm hyper enough as it is
I think I'm hyper enough
When all our bones and muscles hurt
What's so funny about that?
When you remember a saying you can't relearn
What's so funny about that?
I think I'm hyper enough as it is
I think I'm hyper enough as it is
I think I'm hyper enough as it is
I think I'm hyper enough
And I know you are never wrong
I know you are never wrong
I was not weak but the drink was strong
I know you are never wrong
I think I'm hyper enough as it is
I think I'm hyper enough as it is
You would not exist
If it weren't for the flashlight shining in my face
Maybe I could resist
I think I'm hyper enough as it is
I think I'm hyper enough as it is
I think I'm hyper enough as it is
I think I'm hyper enough
When all our bones and muscles hurt
What's so funny about that?
When you remember a saying you can't relearn
What's so funny about that?
I think I'm hyper enough as it is
I think I'm hyper enough as it is
I think I'm hyper enough as it is
I think I'm hyper enough
And I know you are never wrong
I know you are never wrong
I was not weak but the drink was strong
I know you are never wrong
I think I'm hyper enough as it is
I think I'm hyper enough as it is

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
hmm...no ones said anything bout superchunk!??!?!?!?! wooo! i guess that makes me their biggest fan! dude...great song! (100,000 fireflies is better) hehe~i get to see 'em next month w/the get up kids n' hot rod circuit!!
If it weren't for those (laughter guns??) you're riding on
I always thought that it was "master plans" in place of "laughter guns". There is a great chance that I have been thinking the wrong thing, but that is what i always hear and it makes sense to me.
no one comments superchunk?? i love this song, i listen to it when i'm hyper. it makes me feel happy
oh man, this is fucking great!! From Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. I love this band. I listened to this song for the first time in 1999, i bought the album the next day, everyday of my life i listen this song one time at least, its the perfect song to start the day in a good way, ive been looking for the lyrics all this time and now, at last, ive found it!!! (if you dont speak english, its impossible to understand the lyrics!). Thanks my God, now im really happy!!! thanks everybody!!
Lepidotera, the first line of the song is slurred in every sing le version, often deliberately. There's no definitive answer. The line "laughter guns" is, I believe from the Hyper Enough single. There's a debate between two disc jockey's over the first line, that is one of the suggestions.
That DJ debate, which is clearly a joke, appears as a 40-minute bonus track on the Laughter Guns EP.
good song! great job on the lyrcs
I call BS- there of course is a definitive lyric here. Stand back as I school these fewlies....

"If it weren't for those lofty currents you're riding on, you would not exist." Read here for the account from one of the guys in on "The Laughter Guns" radio show:

tubafrenzy.org/weblog/archives/2004/07/pogo_in_your_he.html
I'd say this song's about drugs and wanting to do them but knowing it's not worth it.
Great song! I'm a very big Superchunk fan (been one since right after 'On the Mouth' came out'). Anyway, the first line is 'lofty currents' (not 'laughter guns'). I'll update the lyrics.

There's a great 42 minute breakdown of this song by some Chapel Hill DJs on 'The Laughter Guns EP'.
