"Close to Me" as written by and Robert James Smith....
I've waited hours for this
I've made myself so sick
I wish I'd stayed asleep today
I never thought this day would end
I never thought tonight could ever be
This close to me

Just try to see in the dark
Just try to make it work
To feel the fear before you're here
I make the shapes come much too close
I pull my eyes out
Hold my breath
And wait until I shake

But if I had your faith
Then I could make it safe and clean
If only I was sure
That my head on the door was a dream

I've waited hours for this
I've made myself so sick
I wish I'd stayed asleep today
I never thought this day would end
I never thought tonight could ever be
This close to me

But if I had your face
Then I could make it safe and clean
If only I was sure
That my head on the door
Was a dream, was a dream

    General Commenti love this song.
i found a quote about what he thinks about the song:

'it's like the end of the day where you feel nothing has been achieved and you're in a hurry to get the day over with so you can start the next one. You tell yourself you're going to do lots of positive things. But the next day is just like the one before. Sometimes it goes on for weeks.'

General CommentIf you listen to this song on headphones, you can hear Robert panting in the background. Its wild.

I vote it 'Best song to listen to on full blast through headphones'

General Commentdinosaur jrs cover of just like heaven is great, but not as good as the fantastic original. This song is absolutely wonderful, beautiful, elegant and haunting, i adore every second of it. I don't think it is about wanking somehow

General CommentSimply put, this song is about the anxiety that is associated with the anticipation of an exciting, important event. This event could be a sexual union, be it a first experience or a reunion with a partner, or it could be a show, or it could be about the nearing completion of an important project. Really any event that would elicit an overwhelming sense of anticipation anxiety.
The bridge, with "if i had your faith..." is meant to explain the deep seeded desire to make this event turn out perfect. At the same time, it gives away the author's lack of confidence and fear of the unknown that are so central to the anticipation anxiety. I think the bridge is key to the understanding of the song, because the author betrays his true feelings of inadequacy by admitting that he is incapable of assuring that the event will go as planned without outside help, or in this case, a stronger faith, or confidence.

I love this song because Robert Smith gets right at the core emotions behind insecurity and anxiety in such a visceral way that his desperation for perfection is palpable. I love Why?'s cover of it as well, because their take on the song involves a much slower, meaningful tempo that Smith never could have done because it would have been far to depressing and would have changed the core emotion of the song from anticipation anxiety to dread.

General CommentThis song practically haunts you. I mean I get it stuck in my head for days, and its lyrics are beautiful. I am pretty into emo, and all the new-wave "punk" shit, but I really like this song.

General Commentthis song is one of my most favorite cure songs...it's right up there with Jupiter Crash and Just Like Heaven. Robert Smith is a genious!!! i admire him sooo much i actually did a report on him for my speech final he had such an interesting life too. and theres just something about his voice and music that just gets to everyone even if you dont relate to the lyrics or heck even if you dont understand them...you still feel it. I AM SO MAD they wont come back to the US i'm afraid they will retire for good before i get to see them :(....by the way i'm a girl I M me @ sweetsweetcure

General Commentit only sounds perfect coming from the cure. the tempo is just right with this one. i prefer the slow sounding one to the getup kids version, not that i have anything against them.

General CommentAnd its because you're an "emo" chick. The Cure's version kills the Get up Kids version. The only cover of a new wave song that doesn't suck is the Deftones cover of Depeche Mode "Sweetest Perfection".

General CommentThis is a great song :)
I must say that the Cure's verision owns the Get Up Kids'. The tempo is rather nice in the kids' verision, but Robert Smith sings soooo much better than the singer in the Kids' and the trumpets kicks ass :)

Ohh, and I hate to sound boring, but isn't this song about masturbation?
