I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
I hung your picture on the wall and that's all it is
I break my fingers to make a call and that's all it is
I know you're living way out west and I don't think that I confessed
Everything I feel
You say you got no faith in things that you can't see
Well I'm sorry I ain't there with you but you ain't here with me
And I'm down in all my fears
But I ain't crying no tears over you
Cause everything's wrong
Well it's all right
Everything's wrong
Well it's all right
You said that this is crazy you're a half a world away
Well I'm sitting and I'm thinking but I didn't know what to say
So I said something I can't touch, I always want way too much
Anyway
Cause everything's wrong
Well it's all right
Everything's wrong
Well it's all right
I hung your picture on the wall but that's all it is
I break my fingers to make a call and that's all it is
I know you're living way out west
Don't get me wrong I'm not impressed
With you no more
I break my fingers to make a call and that's all it is
I know you're living way out west and I don't think that I confessed
Everything I feel
You say you got no faith in things that you can't see
Well I'm sorry I ain't there with you but you ain't here with me
And I'm down in all my fears
But I ain't crying no tears over you
Cause everything's wrong
Well it's all right
Everything's wrong
Well it's all right
You said that this is crazy you're a half a world away
Well I'm sitting and I'm thinking but I didn't know what to say
So I said something I can't touch, I always want way too much
Anyway
Cause everything's wrong
Well it's all right
Everything's wrong
Well it's all right
I hung your picture on the wall but that's all it is
I break my fingers to make a call and that's all it is
I know you're living way out west
Don't get me wrong I'm not impressed
With you no more

“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
Plastic Bag

“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
this is one of the only songs i have ever truly connected to. i understand every sentiment that they are trying to express in this. the man i am, yes, still, in love with i had to leave almost a year ago. the understatement of emotion is how i tried, and am still struggling, to cope with my life without him. i break my fingers to make a call, and thats all it is. theyre not talking about someone that they are getting over, theyre lying to themselves. the shine of a new relationship has worn off, 'im not impressed with you no more', but theyre still in love. i am getting on with my life. but if he came back to me, id fall for him all over again. everythings wrong, but its alright. im coping.
The song is about a two day relationship John had with a girl from California. John lived in Buffalo, she lived out west, it wasn't gonna work. The girl actually had a photo credit and was thanked in the liner notes of "Hold Me Up".
@boynamedgoo22 She actually knew Johnny for a number of years prior to the song and they were friends. She ended up moving to Seattle.
It is so obvious that this song is about a guy who's girlfriend moves away and they fail at an attempt to have a long distance relationship. The guy is sad at first but learns that he doesn't need her.
This is my fave song of all time! "something i can't touch i always want way too much" - i live by those lyrics, life is never simple and i think this song captures that. It's obviously about John not being able to have some1 he really wants due to them moving away and the love is still there but theres just nothing he can do about it and basically saying life isnt plain and simple it has many complications, thats why i love this song, its true to life!
"everythings wrong, but it's alright"
thats gold right there

everything's wrong, and it's all right, I've learned to live by those words. There have been a lot of times when everything, and I mean everything, was wrong, and I just keep this song in mind.
A year ago I moved away from a country i lived in for four years and I left behind someone extremely important to me. So this song definitely related to me the first few months when i was completely depressed and homesick. One of my closest friends that i left behind was having all these problems and i felt bad for not being with him but he wasnt with me either so it was like "what can i do???" and even though at first it was hard and after a few months my feelings changed from "I know you're living way out west and I don't think that I confessed Everything I feel" to " I know you're living way out west Don't get me wrong I'm not impressed With you no more"... So i think it is about leaving someone behind either physically by moving away or by just drifting apart and slowly getting over it...
This is a great song, as many of the Goo Goo Dolls' earlier songs are. Great song.
just another note on this song. NUMBER ONE GOO SONG.
