In my place, in my place
Were lines that I couldn't change
I was lost, oh yeah

I was lost, I was lost
Crossed lines I shouldn't have crossed
I was lost, oh yeah

Yeah how long must you wait for it?
Yeah how long must you pay for it?
Yeah how long must you wait for it?
Oh for it

I was scared, I was scared
Tired and under prepared
But I wait for it

If you go, if you go
Leave me down here on my own
Then I'll wait for you (yeah)

Yeah how long must you wait for it?
Yeah how long must you pay for it?
Yeah how long must you wait for it?
Oh for it

Sing it, please, please, please
Come back and sing to me, to me, me
Come on and sing it out, now, now
Come on and sing it out, to me, me
Come back and sing it

In my place, in my place
Were lines that I couldn't change
And I was lost, oh yeah, oh yeah

General Comment:hmmm, i can imagine a lad I know singing this to me coz of his position and my position... weird... ne ways ill explain, i think its about two friends, one falls in love with the other but the other one is too busy waiting for that one guy she adores, he might have a girlfriend, he might not even know her but she's waiting and she doesnt even know it. This song is written in the perspective of the friend who loves his friend... "crossed lines I shouldn't have crossed" he shouldn't have fallen in love with his friend but he did but she can't see it. "How long must you wait for him, How long must you pay for him" how long until you can get over the pain that the man you want isn't ther.
"I was scared I was scared, Tired and underprepared, but i wait for you" in other words, the lad told this girl he loves her, likes her whatever and he was scared and when she said she didn't feel the same coz of da other guy, he still waits.
In my scenario I'm the friend, my friend told me he cares for me but I didn't know and I'm too busy waiting for this lad who has a girlfriend to see, care or want to love him back. It's a song of unrequited love.

General Comment:i think this song is about a friend talking for another friend who died. for example Ryan Dunn, Jackass star who died in a car crash. "crossed lines i shouldnt have crossed" (drink and drive). "how long must you wait/pay for it" (how long he has to wait/pay for his mistake). (i was scared, tired and underprepared" (how not ready the guy was when his friend past). "if you go, if you go and leave me down here on my own. then ill wait for you" (talking about how he'll meet up with his friend again). "singing please please please come back and sing for me" (how he wished their friend was still here and would come back to sing for them one last time). i think we all have someone we wish would come back and sing for us. it's deeper than just a relationship.

General Comment:I know it sounds a bit uncanny, but does anyone share my view that this song could quite easily be about writer's block? If you look past the tempting 'oh no I lost her scenario' or other such love-related takeon, then this song could quite easily be about the difficulties of writing. What does anyone else think?

General Comment:I'm a bit late contributing here, but I've loved this song for years. I agree with those who think the song is about unrequited love of some sort.

Person A loves person B. But person B is "waiting" for person C. Person A feels "lost" because he/she crossed the line with person B.

I have to admit though, that (as another poster pointed out), I'm not sure about the song title. Perhaps it's person A feeling trapped in "his place", not being able to break out?

General Comment:I got this album as a present from my boyfriend, and I liked it a lot, yet not neccessarily this song that much. We went hiking one morning through this trail in the woods in the Sawtooth Mountains, got lost, and eventually reached our destination: Sweethearts' Bluff. The view was amazing. After that, as we were making our way back down, we came to this huge tree that had fallen over in a storm, he climbed over it first, and then I stepped onto the tree and he offered to help me down the other side (like a five foot drop) I expected to quickly hop down, but he slowly let me float down to the ground and into his arms. When I listened to this song after that, all I could think of was our hike and that moment. So for me, the words "In My Place" mean being in his embrace and enjoying the sunshine and tranquility of that morning.

Memory:Saw this on a great tribute video for Ryan Dunn. I will never forget that he died on my 18th birthday. RIP Random Hero. You will be missed by your fans and the kids who looked up to you.

General Comment:Chris Martin is a big fan of Ian McCulloch, lead singer and founder of the Liverpool band Echo And The Bunnymen. Martin wore McCulloch's coat when he recorded this. This song seems to be about a guy who loves a girl who doesn't reciprocate. He is telling her that he will always wait for her, but he doesn't think that she should stay where she is any longer.

My Interpretation:Here is the way I perceive the song:

In my place, in my place
Were lines that I couldn't change
    I was lost, oh yeah
(In his head and/or in his house, there were mistakes that he made, which he couldn't take back)

I was lost, I was lost
Crossed lines I shouldn't have crossed
    I was lost, oh yeah
(He was confused and went too far with his regretful mistakes that he accidentally made)

Yeah how long must you wait for it?
Yeah how long must you pay for it?
Yeah how long must you wait for it?
    Oh for it
(Wondering what his consequences are and when he'll properly be forgiven for the things he did)

I was scared, I was scared
    Tired and under prepared
    But I wait for it
(He was overwhelmed with what he did and has exhausted himself, yet he stands there patiently wanting a response from his love interest)

If you go, if you go
Leave me down here on my own
Then I'll wait for you (yeah)
(The fear of him being dumped would make him feel hopeless and undetermined about where to turn to next)

Yeah how long must you wait for it?
Yeah how long must you pay for it?
Yeah how long must you wait for it?
    Oh for it
    (Same as above)

    Sing it, please, please, please
Come back and sing to me, to me, me
Come on and sing it out, now, now
Come on and sing it out, to me, me
    Come back and sing it
(He's begging this girl not to go. He wants her to stay with him, so they can be happy, like they once were)

In my place, in my place
Were lines that I couldn't change
And I was lost, oh yeah, oh yeah
(He realizes that he was a fool for making his mistakes and wants to make it up to this girl)
