"My sister" as written by and Juliana Hatfield....
My sister
My sister
My sister.

I hate my sister, she's such a bitch.
She acts as if she doesn't even know that I exist.
But I would do anything to let her know I care.
But I am only talking to myself 'cause she isn't there.

My sister, I love my sister, she's the best.
She's cooler than any other girl that I have ever met.
She had the greatest band, she had the greatest guy.
She's good at everything and doesn't even try.

She's got a wall around her nobody can climb.
She lets her ladder down for those who really shine.
I tried to scale it, but to me she's blind.
So I lit a firecracker, went off in my eye.

I miss my sister, why'd she go ?
She's the one who would have taken me
To my first all-ages show.
It was the violent femmes and the del fuegos,
Before they had a record out.
Before they went gold,
And started to grow.

I miss my sister.
I miss my sister.
I miss my sister.
I really miss her.

My InterpretationI kind of love JH's music, so I know random stuff. In an interview w/MTV where she played "My Sister" acoustic, she told the VJ, Kennedy, that she didn't have a sister and that she sort of just made it up.

And recently she wrote a memoir, "When I Grow Up," and she wrote that the inspiration for the lyrics came randomly from one of her brother's longtime girlfriends, and how if she ever did have an older sister, she would be like her brother's girlfriend because she took her to her first all ages show and introduced her to rock music outside of radio mainstream. But mainly I think it's just about losing someone.

General CommentReally like this song, but the point is...

I had the same relationship with my older brother when we were little. I mean - i hated his guts, he hated mine, but now its all gone and i think that he's a wonderful person.

But one line that's confusing is

I miss my sister, why'd she go ?

No idea whether she means death or just simple absence of her sister.

General CommentThis song has a contradictory message of feelings towards the sister of the singer. Of course, it can be referred to the singer hating her sister because she left on her own will, but with those feelings just being a cloak for her true love.

On the other hand -and I quite agree with this interpretation- it's a songs which narrates the change of a point of view in our feelings towards our siblings as we grow up. Typically we fight with our older brothers or sisters when we are kids, but as we grow up, we can begin sharing interesting experiences with them, such as being taken by them to a concert. That's something which could be ordinary for a 20-something, but extra-cool for an adolescent.

A relationship like that and related experiences can really build a strong bond, a bond which would deepen the grief at the death of thatt older sibling.

General CommentThis is the song I usually sing with my sister. She's 13 years older than me and she left the house when I was five. Now she lives in Spain and we sing it all the time. This whole song discribes our relationship except for the hate part, cause I've never hated my sister..

The only part I don't understand is: "So I lit a firecracker went off in my eye"

    Do you understand?

General CommentIt's actually about a fictitious character. Juliana does not even have a sister. She has two brothers.

This song is very old, and these lyrics are dramatically different from a more current piece of her writing, so i don't relate to them much, but to answer you Sara616 - i think, she means she really wanted to get attention, and she was virtually invisible, so she went to desperate measures, and tried too hard, and it blue up in her face, so to speak...

General CommentI think this song in general is pretty much describing the typical sibling relationship, when they're younger, of course siblings will fight most of time, so the first part of the song kind of describes the love-hate relationship between two siblings, whereas the rest describes the siblings when they're older, where they love eachother and don't fight as much as they used to and such and the special memories that they have with eachother have a special place in their hearts and so on.

General CommentI think it's just feelings every girl feels towards her older sister.
    (For me anyway.)
Some days, I absolutly cannot stand my sister. She'll be abnoxious and rude and stupid. But deep down I'll always look up to her. I'll always think she's the coolest. She actually did take me to my first all ages show((:

My InterpretationWhat I get from it...

In the first verse speaker is young and immature, wanting nothing more than to get attention from her big sister, but at the same time she resents her deeply for having such a great life.

The second stanza shows the big sister showing more love to the speaker, which makes her very happy.

In the next verse, the little sister tries to become as naturally perfect as her sister, to no avail.

In the last lines, several years later, the sister is late, and in her mourning the grown-up speaker thinks about all that could have been, and how their relationship would have further blossomed.

General CommentWhen my sister got sick (with cancer) she blamed everyone. including me and my dad and then rest of the family. so she refused to see us or talk to us. I guess I can realize why but that didn't/doesn't stop it from hurting.

We still haven't heard anything from her. But when I need her she was dead to me...I listen to this song and think of her.

I love you Lara wherever you are...
