"It's Only Me (The Wizard of Magicland)" as written by and Steven/robertson Page....
Speaking as a guy who's really got it going on
It's only natural
It's only me

Take it from a fella
Who's been round the block so many times
He knows the only parking spot that's free
It's only me

You can say I've tried everything
I'd save on my wedding ring
Who knows me half as well as me?

I'm not antisocial and it's nothing that's reproachful
It's just natural
It's only me

I can't think of anybody else
I'd rather spend some one on one time with
It's not that hard to see
It's only me

I believe in monogamy
I'm not asking a lot of me
I give me R E S P E C T

And if your heart is broken
You can just do what you do best
You can just do what you do
When your heart is broken
Trust in the one who will love you
Never put others above you

I thought I was using me to get to you
But this is too unnatural
It's only me

They say you'll never love another till you love yourself
Well brother, I'm in love with everyone I see
It's only me

You can say I've tried everything
I'd save on my wedding ring
Who knows me half as well as me?
I believe in monogamy
I'm not asking a lot of me
I give me R E S P E C T

Song MeaningIt's about masturbation. I've heard Steven Page say it himself.

General CommentWhat an incredible song. I didn't know that I was a Barenaked Ladies fan until I heard this song. It has such an incredible message. "Never put others above you." I hope that I never throw away everything for one person. What if that person leaves? Then I will have nothing. I will never turn my back on myself, so I will always love myself. I will always understand myself better than anyone else will ever understand me, and better than I will ever understand anyone else. I believe that I truly love myself, and that this feeling has allowed me to love so many other people. Whether or not I am loved in return from those other people is not the point. The point is that I have found that passion inside myself. This makes me love myself even more, and that is much better anyway. Even when I have no one, I still have everyone. And even when I have nothing, I still have everything. I can go and search the world for my answers, but I guarantee that the journey will end inside myself. I have been known to say: “I had the damn cup in my back pocket all along” (in reference to the Holy Grail).

General CommentHmm...I hate to change the lovely idealistic view selfwilledfate has on this song, but the boys themselves have said that this song is about masturbation...and for the record, the line is "I'm the me in monogomy." Get it?? I had to look at it twice when I first realized it..."You can say I've tried everything/I'd save on the wedding ring" and "He knows the only parking spot that's free/It's only me." I guess all songs can be interpreted in many ways, a lot of their songs are so vague I still don't understand them. But this song is about, plain and simple, having a monogomous relationship with your right hand. I hope you remain a fan, selfwilledfate - they really are a great group!

General Commentselfwilledfate... That was truly beautiful!!! (said with a bit of sarcasm) I think you should calm down a bit, and just go have a shower or something, and have a bat. (masturbate) You said that you would never throw everything away for someone else. I don't know if you're a guy or a chick, but can you say you've truly been in love? If you aren't prepared to give all you have to someone, I don't see how you could have been. Love, will hurt, if you give all you have to someone and they stomp all over it, but it can also be the most beautiful experience you will ever have, if your love is given back to you. Love is a risk. Anyway, all this talk is getting me randy. I'm going to go upstairs and have a bat. Later

General CommentI hope that one day everyone will learn that you can't give someone else advice. A person can only share their personal ideas; but they can't expect other people to follow them. I hope that I will never again tell someone that they are wrong; I never want to tell someone what they should do. I am not lost. I have found true love before, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I am simply saying that I love myself as well. I believe I have found my holy grail. I am not currently in love, which is a shame, but I know that my life is not empty because of that lack. I don't really care if anyone else agrees with me. I don’t write late-night messages with dreams of gathering followers. I am right about me, and you are right about you. There should never be a conflict. And as for the song: just because it is about masturbation, doesn't mean it isn't about so much more. I am not all that ignorant. I had not missed the sexual innuendos. [Thanks for the correction ucfgirlie].

General Commentselfwilledfate, regarding the first comment you made.. "I believe that I truly love myself, and that this feeling has allowed me to love so many other people." .. Have you read Erich Fromm's "The Art of Loving".. He's an established psychoanalyst that maintains that you can't even begin to love others, if you don't love yourself. He says, "...love for and understanding of on'es own self, cannot be separated from respect and love and understanding for another individual. The love for my own self is inseparably connected with the love for any other being." ... I think you made a valid point.

    Sorry for the tangental remark.

General CommentWhoa, you guys are getting off subject. You're supposed to be talking about the song, which I love. I agree with ucfgirlie, this song is about masturbation, and it's hilarious. It's the best song about wacking off since Turning Japanese!!!

General CommentI agree with Bojangles.. despite what it's about, it is a good me song for any occassion. Hell, I play it all the time and celebrate all that is me. And hey, masturbation is better than therapy.

General Commentwow, i never realized that. when you know what it's about, it's not only a really fun song, but really funny.
but did anyone notice the mistake in the above lyrics? "I believe in monogomy" rather than "I'm the me in monogomy." I'm new here, how does one go about getting that fixed? also is it just me, or is the last verse "But this is truely natural" rather than "But this is too unnatural"? I figure since there's one mistake, there could be another. if i'm wrong, please enlighten me.
