Like a promise unfulfilled
From an emptiness distilled
As one final sign
Perpetuates our slow decline
We've failed
The systems we've created drag us down

On crowded streets
We'll die alone
Our dreams are only flesh and bone

One day some way
When you fall apart and waste away
You'll see no doubt
This world is gonna spit you out

No sign of life
This world of lies
Is gonna cut you down to size

They'll spit you out
Like a spoke in their machine
Some people break like glass
It just might be your final chance to feel
Can you distinguish fate from what seems real
Enamored by the romance of regret

My OpinionThis is one of my favorite songs from "Symptoms of a Leveling Spirit." It's so vicious compared to most of the material on the album, and it brings back their trademark anger to close the album fantastically (not regarding the hidden track).

In my opinion, it's about both loss of hope, and extreme cynicism. The chorus really says both to me. The first verse really says loss of hope. Referring to the world or people as "they" (as in, as a whole) marks the narrator as a cynic because he/she generalizes about humans and the world as a whole that they/we will "spit [them] out."

By the way, easily one of Good Riddance's greatest instances of songwriting is this: "Some people break like glass / It just might be their final chance to feel." That is just beautiful.
