In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Ice will melt, water will boil
You and I can shake off this mortal coil
It's bigger than us
You don't have to worry about it
Ready or not here comes the drop
You feel lucky when you know where you are
You know it's gonna come true
Here in your arms I remember
It's only natural that I should want to
Be there with you
It's only natural that you should
Feel the same way too
It's easy when you don't try
Going on first impressions
Man in a cage has made his confession
Now you've seen me at my worst
And it won't be the last time I'm down there
I want you to know I feel completely at ease
Read me like a book
That's fallen down between your knees
Please, let me have my way with you
It's only natural that I should want to
Be there with you
It's only natural that you should
Feel the same way too
It's circumstantial, it's nothing written in the sky
And we don't even have to try
Shaking like mud, buildings of glass
Sink into the bay, they'll be under the rocks again
You don't have to say I know you're afraid
It's only natural that I should want to
Be there with you
It's only natural that you should
Feel the same way too
It's circumstantial, it's something I was born to
It's only natural, can I help it if I want to? Can I help it if I want to?
You and I can shake off this mortal coil
It's bigger than us
You don't have to worry about it
Ready or not here comes the drop
You feel lucky when you know where you are
You know it's gonna come true
Here in your arms I remember
It's only natural that I should want to
Be there with you
It's only natural that you should
Feel the same way too

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
Wow I can't believe how many whacked people are out there. This song is about death and dying. Does anyone read anymore? "Shake off this mortal coil"? Does that ring a bell? Hello? "Under the rocks again?" Hello?
I don't think this is about death, per se. "Le petit mort", or the little death, is a French metaphor for the orgasm. That goes well with "you read me like a book that's fallen down between your knees, please let me have my way with you."<br /> <br /> When he says, "you and I can shake of this mortal coil", I think he is suggesting that they could enjoy a "little death" together.<br /> <br /> Basically, he's begging her for sex, and telling her that there's nothing wrong or dirty about it. "It's only natural..."
I took "under the rocks" to be a play on "on the rocks". So under would therefore be good times
Each of the comments shines a light on different elements of the song. I believe its primarily about relationships and their capacity to allay our existential angst. The song reminds us that we have free will but also that we are part of nature and are drawn toward the natural order of things. One day we will die. When we go with our instincts rather than struggle with them and accept that we have our good and bad sides and we have a start and end of life then relationships can blossom and sustain us through life.
