"Instinct" as written by and Neil Finn....
I lit the match
I lit the match
I saw another monster turn to ash
Felt the burden lifting from my back
Do you recognise a nervous twitch
That exposes the weakness of the myth
When your turn comes round
And the light goes on
And you feel your attraction again
Your instinct can't be wrong
Separate the fiction from the fact
A (get) little slow to react
But it's nearly time to flick the switch
And I'm hanging by a single stitch
Laughing at the stony face of gloom
When your turn comes round
And the light goes on
And you feel your attraction again
Your instinct can't be wrong
Feel this come and go
Where the true present lies
Calling down, calling down, calling
Laughing at the stony face of gloom
When your turn comes round
And the days get long
And you feel your attraction to him
Your instinct can't be wrong
Calling down
Calling down

General CommentSomeone once told me that this song is about sitting around smoking a joint, passing it around and getting stoned on the good old Kiwi one-toke.

General CommentSkippy19, it sure can seem that way, but I think there may be another, more meaningful idea as to what this song is about. Don't know what it is though! I like the song nontheless, Neil Finn's voice is brilliant.

General CommentI think this song is about drug use, but something more than smoking pot: it's about being addicted to, and smoking, heroin. "Monster" is far too sinister a term for pot, and the comment "Felt the burden (the monkey) lifting from my back" tells me that when the smoke hits, the "jonesing" that's felt by not using for a while goes away. I also think the phrase "Laughing at the stony face of gloom" is too dark for just pot. Much more to this than smoking a joint. The whole thing: "your turn comes 'round", "feel your attraction again", etc., has to be about hard core addiction. Great melody, great lyrics, great song.

General Comment'Where the true present lies'
is this line meant as - 'where the true... present lies' like the once-thought truthful people/things present a lie/s. Similar to that of a facade.
or is it - 'where the true present... lies' like the 'true present' being (reality) is seen at that moment, under all the dreams. or perhaps a true present, such as happiness, lies there in front of them?
but i really like this song, and i hope to hear more crowdie albums :)
