"Thomas" as written by and Maynard James/howerdel Keenan....
Humble and helpless
Learning to pray
Praying for visions
To show me the way
Show me the way to forgive you
Allow me to let it go
Allow me to be forgiven
Show me the way to let go
Show me the way to forgive you
Allow me to let it go
Allow me to be forgiven
Show me the way to let go

Illuminate me
Illuminate me
Illuminate me
I'm just praying for you to show me
Where I'm to begin

Hoping to
Hoping to reconnect to you
Hoping to reconnect to you
Reconnect to you

My OpinionMaynard has always had a rough relationship with God. Listen to Judith and you'll understand what I mean. Judith was inspired by Maynard's mother who had an undying love for her God, who in Maynard's opinion left her broken and alone. I believe this song is referring to the biblical Thomas because he had asked Christ to show him his hands where the nails pierced them before he would believe that he was really the resurrected son of God. I believe Maynard wants to forgive not only God, but himself, and be forgiven in return. I think this song is Maynard's way of reconnecting to his God in some way.

My InterpretationThis is simply a song about a falling out between two people that have a strong and powerful connection. One where their life feels somewhat empty without that other person. They are seeking forgiveness and the strength to let go, move forward and reconnect.

General CommentIts obvious to me, that Maynard is talking about having a problem with someone (fairly serious problem i take it), and is looking for a way to forgive and to be forgiven. That's my take at least.

General CommentIt's a reference to Thomas in the Bible I think. Thomas is the disciple of Jesus who doesn't have faith when he comes back from the dead that it really is him. The theme of forgiveness also features in the Bible. I don't know exactly how this relates to the song though.

General Commentthomas was said to posses the same markings on his finger-tips as jesus..he did not believe that jesus had such abilities until he witnessed his resurection...this song i believe is an apolige to Jesus by Thomas for not believing in him"Show me the way to forgive you"

General Commentit could be from jesus' perspective in fact, which would be interesting, but i think the deal with a few APC songs (namely magdalena, orestes, and thomas) is that these songs are about mythical (i believe that the bible is mythology, sorry to those who disagree, i respect your opinions though) figures and how their dillemas or other's dillemas affect us today. without knowing who mary magdalene, thomas, or orestes was, these songs REALLY pretain to our own lives. APC are geniuses.

this song contains a TON of musical metaphors and symbolism. the "come into my misery" is SOO haunting and captivating, and just the crypticality (word?) of the music is similar to the cripticality of the music. obviously there are words said in the background of the song, during "come into my misery". id love to find out what they are.

General CommentI got a little something to tell you all. The line "Come into my misery" which you've been raving about is really "Hopin' to reconnect with you" Turn the volume up high and you can hear "Hopin' to" not "Come into". They sound very much alike just keep an ear open for the "H" sound at the beginning instead of "C". Just wanted to let you know so you don't go off thinking it says one thing when it really says another. This song is so cool. Forgiveness is definately the dominant theme here and there's something about this song that just gives me goosebumps. Especially the end where Maynard says "Hopin' to reconnect with you" So chilling!

General CommentI saw an interview with Billy and Maynard and Maynard said that many APC songs have religious backgrounds. Like this for example, he said someone close to him didn't believe in something or another and he felt it was like Doubting Thomas from the bible who didn't believe in Jesus' resurrection until he put his fingers in the holes in Jesus' hands where the nails had been.

General Commentharrys right about many APC songs having religous backrounds, i also read in an intrewview with maynard and Maynard said that many of the the song titles on Mer de Noms are latin i think and are names of gods and mer de noms means "the sea of names" or something like that
