"Purple Rain" as written by and Prince Rogers Nelson....
I never meant to cause you any sorrow
I never meant to cause you any pain
I only wanted to one time to see you laughing
I only wanted to see you
Laughing in the purple rain

Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
I only wanted to see you
Bathing in the purple rain

I never wanted to be your weekend lover
I only wanted to be some kind of friend
Baby, I could never steal you from another
It's such a shame our friendship had to end

Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
I only wanted to see you
Underneath the purple rain

Honey, I know, I know
I know times are changing
It's time we all reach out
For something new, that means you too

You say you want a leader
But you can't seem to make up your mind
I think you better close it
And let me guide you to the purple rain

Purple rain, purple rain
Purple rain, purple rain
If you know what I'm singing about up here
C'mon, raise your hand

Purple rain, purple rain
I only want to see you
Only want to see you
In the purple rain

Purple is the color of good judgment. It is the color of people seeking spiritual fulfillment. It is said if you surround yourself with purple you will have peace of mind.

I read some description years ago (can't remember where) that said Heaven has 7 levels, and each level has a corresponding color. When each level blends into the other, the color is so bright, it looks like it's raining that color onto the level below. Purple is supposedly the corresponding color of the seventh and highest level, where God sits. So if your soul reaches the 6th level (the highest a human can go) then you will be "laughing/bathing" in purple rain.

'Purple Rain' is a continuation to the judgement day theme from '1999':

"when I woke up this mornin', could've sworn it was Judgment Day. The sky was all purple, there were people runnin' everywhere. Tryin' 2 run from the destruction..."

The sky in '1999' is purple becuz of the bombs, and the bombing is what makes the rain purple afterwards, the rain is 'cleaning' all the pain and suffering the bombing caused...

'I only want 2 see U in the purple rain' means something like 'I wanna see U in a world after the war/ judgement day'...

General CommentWhat I believe is that.

He is in love with someone that doesn't feel the same as him.

"Baby I could never steal you from another"

It means that the woman he loves with already with someone else, and he that would not interfare.

All he could do is just shower her with his love,
and don't let his love for her stop her from doing anything else.

    But that's only my opinion.

General Commentit's not about sex, this song is about being sorry and wanting to be a friend to someone, purple is a very spiritual color and very mystical, it could be about trying to fix a relationship or just letting someone go but you want them to not walk away in the rain, you want them to leave in the purple rain, into a new path, letting go. very sad, very beautiful, touching.

General CommentWell purple is considered a color of love. I think that he means that he wants the girl to be under his love all of the time, and he says that "I don't want to be your weekend lover" which tells that he wants to be with her all of the time, and it also shows that they broke up apart. So, I think that he is saying that he loves her, and he is trying to teach her something about him.

I never liked pop until I heard this song.

General CommentI love this song because I think the 2nd verse is stunning. It's the only verse in any song that I've heard that made me go "Yep. That is exactly how I feel right now." In college I had a short fling with a guy who I later became good friends with. Years later, we had one more lusty encounter. Two weeks later, he started dating this girl who made him stop talking to me because of it. ( she also made him quit talking to all his other friends too- but that's a whole other song) Prince said in 4 line what I wish I had the ability to tell that guy now. I still miss his friendship; what happened between us wasn't worth loosing him over; and I would never do anything to sabatoge what he has going- I respect his choices, even if I don't agree with them. If only I could pull of purple velvet, lace, pumps, and a geri curl like Prince then maybe I could win my ex friend over. But alas, I cannot.

General Commenti agree with calmity too. he's in love with this girl but he doesn't want to ruin her relationship, he just wants to near, be her friend; it's a wanna-see-you-happy-even-if-it's-not-with-me kinda thing

General CommentTo me, it seems like a pretty simple song to interpret (then again, I might be WAY off lol).

He and this girl are friends...he loves her (by the way, the "purple rain" is his love for her) but she's with another man. One weekend they were intimate with each other, but he realized he doesn't want her to ruin what she's got with this other guy if he truly makes her happy ("I never meant to cause you any sorry, I never meant to cause you any pain. I only wanted one time to see you laughing in the purple rain"). He would never try to take her from her man, but he doesn't just want to be her weekend fling either, so even though he doesn't want to take her from her man, he can't be just simlpy friends with her anymore either (see second verse, duh).

But in the end, he basically tells her to make a decision. "I know times are changin'" means that he understand he's giving her an ultimatum...to either take him as her man and her lover or end their friendship right now. She talks about what kind of man she wants ("you say you want a leader, but you can't seem to make up your mind") and he knows that he's that man, and he knows that SHE knows he's that man, so he just wants her to close her eyes and really think about what she wants, because he believes she'll choose him. So in actuality, he IS trying to steal her from another, just in a direct, up-front way.

One of the greatest songs ever.

General CommentPrince is an AMAZING artist that can do it all - writes his own music (as well as music for others (ex: Nothing Compares to U - sung by Sinead O'Connor), plays guitar (and just about every other instrument under the sun - but guitar is his personal fave), and sexy to boot

I think my favorite guitar solo of his is when he did "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" on the George Harrison Tribute (or some other Beatle thingy)

Purple Rain is a great song - top 3 fave out of all Prince Songs

MemoryThe crux of Purple Rain goes like This. Prince is a brilliant guitar player and a musical genius! When he writes "I Know times are changing/It's Time we all Reach for something new!," he damn well means it! Which means Purple Rain is a Metal/Rock Hymn of Spiritual Transcendence! Amen Prince!
