"You Know The Rest" as written by and Steve Earle....
Here I go again
Making promises
If I tell you no
It still sounds like yes

You know the rest
Do I have to say it?

Am I in too deep?
Can I still confess?
When you trusted me
That was just a guess

I guess
You know the rest
You know the rest
Do I have to say it?

Well, I warned you once
But without success
And I just escape
With my heart
A mess

Know the rest
(It's not so easy)
You know the rest
(It's not that easy)
Do I have to say it?
You know the rest.

General CommentI think Aimee Mann is a wonderful song writer and I love her early work with Til Tuesday so much more than her later work. Not that her later work isn’t well done but it lacks the impassioned poet’s love angst that lends itself so well to song. The problem is she could drive herself nuts chasing turbulent love affairs for musical inspiration.

The lyrics and delivery of “and I just escape—with my heart … a mess” is stupendously passionate. Many of the Til Tuesday songs didn’t climb the charts but then not all great music does and we don’t want it to. Top 40 hits tend to become boring because we hear them far too often. Many of the songs we love to hear so many years later, we had to hunt for.

From the “Voices Carry” album, this song was no doubt inspired by Mann’s relationship with Hausman—and from a romance standpoint, where the happily ever-afters are intriguingly elusive—brilliantly so.
