"Sailing" is about someone who is dying during which time their life is rushing before them and they are looking forward to being near God and therefore they will be free. Each verse has the...
I am sailing
I am sailing
Home again
'Cross the sea
I am sailing,
Stormy waters
To be near you,
To be free

I am flying,
I am flying
Like a bird
'Cross the sky
I am flying,
Passing high clouds
To be with you,
To be free

Can you hear me, can you hear me
Through the dark night, far away
I am dying, forever crying
To be with you, who can say

Can you hear me, can you hear me
Through the dark night far away
I am dying, forever crying
To be with you, who can say

We are sailing, we are sailing
Home again
'Cross the sea
We are sailing
Stormy waters
To be near you,
To be free

Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free
Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free
Oh Lord, to be near you, to be free
Oh Lord

General CommentWow thats such a good story, glad you lived to tell the tale.
I love this song, my parents used to sing it together when I was like three...then I forgot about Rod, now everytime I play it, I think of my parents.
    Its beautiful.

    General CommentHehe. Gotta love irony.
My ex told me to download this last night coz he said it was really sad.
I was highly amused when I listened to it for the first time, but I've listened to it a few times since and now I think it's just beautiful.

General CommentI never heard Rod Stewart’s version of this song, but was fortunate enough to hear Axl Rose’s acoustic version from a UK club appearance last year (it is available on Youtube) and it blew me away. It is such a passionate song.

General Commentgood song but the lyrics arent fully correct.
Can you hear me, can you hear me
thro' the dark night, far away,
    I am dying, forever crying,
to be with you, who can say.

Can you hear me, can you hear me,
thro' the dark night far away.
    I am dying, forever crying,
to be with you, who can say.

    thats the correct wordings there

General CommentAxl Rose is the opposite of passion... His ability to rape any given song is legendary already. Old age + drugs have taken up their toll. Ah well, he had his era along with the rest of the band, no wonder they left the GnR formation when such a person is in charge. I can imagine anyone else would have done the same.
