I just don't feel it in this place
Their thoughts cast me out of here
Their home has run out of space
My mind's already out of here

Won't you come along, dear?
Won't you come along?

Words that are spoke alone
Phrases you will never hear

Empty rooms and a telephone
That I will never use
Never fear

I am all alone, dear
I am all alone

My dogs come sit next to me
A pack of dogs and cigarettes
My only friends speak no words to me
But they look at me and they don't forget
That a boy's best friend
Is his mother or whatever has become his pet

General CommentI believe this song is about a guy who never was apprieciated when he was a child, and is kind of an outcast from society. Because he can't find love outside of his world, he turns to the things that love him most

General CommentI think this song is simply about feeling alone out of place and unwanted.

The first verse conveys a sense of rejection and lonliness - "Their home has run out of space"

The next part emphaises his lonliness as he talks to what seems to be an 'imaginary friend'. This is repeated later in the song as well.

The last verse echoes the previous ones and ends the song on a very meloncholy note.

General CommentI think its just about being lonely, and feeling like an
    outkast.
When i listen to it, i picture a beat up, tired looking,
man who goes home and just sits by the fire drinking
beer and watching tv. all alone

General CommentI really like the instrumental chorus about 2:20 into the song . This song is very sad , although I can't quite figure out why . It makes me think of somebody walking home in the rain , late at night , after something bad has happened. By the way , I have many , many live White Stripes tracks , and if anyone has or knows where I could get a live "A Boy's Best Friend" , I'd greatly appreciated. Thanks:)

General Commenti think its about moving on from a phase in life... where he is right now just isnt working for him (the place, the people). he needs to get out but it also seems like hes in no rush, just depressed. hes not contemplating on leaving, he has already made up his mind "My mind's already out of here" so its a song about waiting around for whenever hes going to get up and leave.

also when he says wont you come along dear? it seems like he is speaking to a girlfriend and saying that they can both move on together, but that maybe he really doesnt want her to, hes just saying it to be nice... or maybe that she isnt wanting to go and isnt paying attention to his question. because its such a little part of the song and the question is never resolved.

and at the end he realizes that his only friends are his dogs and cigarettes, thats what can make him happy until he gets away.

i LOOOVE this song, i actually made a poster for my friend with some of these lyrics becasue her dog really is her only good friend (well, besides me i guess!)... and the music is so sad.

My InterpretationI think this entire album is about social anxiety. Entirely. I think the rejection and low self esteem, coupled with the angst and loneliness that accompanies, well, being alone by choice. The whole first album is about squirming under your own weapon imo.

General CommentI think it's about a guy who's mentally moved on from where he is at the moment (romantically or otherwise) and is still being kept there, even though he's not really a part of that scene anymore, and as a result is kind of excluded, so he turns to the things that he will always love/be into/that love him for comfort, because in the case of the last line 'a boys best friend/is his mother or whatever has become his pet'- your mother is always your mother, and your pet is always your pet.
