"Epiphany" as written by and Greg/gurewitz Graffin....
A new age of reason
Brain treason to trick the mind
What good is searching
If nothing's there to find
We arrive at this place
Of no return my brothers
Only to discover that our minds have led us away
So far from the painful truth
Of who we are

What's right is wrong
What's come has gone
What's clear and pure is not so sure
It came to me
All promises become a lie
All that's benign corrupts in time
The fallacy
Of Epiphany

Come forth bear witness
See the profit from your loss
Beg for forgiveness
Only after you tally the cost
We arrive at this place
Of no return my sisters
Only to discover that our values ran us aground
On the shoal in the sea of what
We could be

What's right is wrong
What's come has gone
What's clear and pure is not so sure
It came to me
All promises become a lie
All that's benign corrupts in time
The fallacy
Of Epiphany

If it's real for me do I have to prove it to you
Why do revelations fade to cold blue untruths
It's oh so relative
Subservient in total to one's perspective

What's right is wrong
What's come has gone
What's clear and pure is not so sure
It came to me
All promises become a lie
All that's benign corrupts in time
The fallacy
Of Epiphany

General CommentPS a key lyric is "Only to discover that our minds have led us away so far from the painful truth of who we are"

OUR MINDS led us away, not society, not the media. Epiphany comes out of nothing.. there's no basis for it which is why it's absurd to base our beliefs on it. I think it's important to know what epiphany actually means so here's the definition.

    A. A revelatory manifestation of a divine being.
B 1. A sudden manifestation of the essence or meaning of something.
    2. A comprehension or perception of reality by means of a sudden intuitive realization: “I experienced an epiphany, a spiritual flash that would change the way I viewed myself” (Frank Maier).

I also suggest looking up manifestation if you don't know what it means.

The process of belief is an elixer when you're weak.. I must admit at times I indulge it on the sneak.. (quote from another BR song) wouldn't you guys agree that having an epiphany is awesome regardless of it being essentially meaningless? I mean, it feels awesome. I think I've had a few. In this case I mean a sudden realization that gives you a new perspective on your way of thinking.

One of my friends decided he believed in God a few weeks ago because of something that happened to him. While I'm disappointed in my friend, that must be a pretty cool feeling to have. Anyway, I guess this is irrelevant to the meaning of the song hehe.

General CommentThis song is just about the moment when you realize that nothing about our existence makes any sense, and all the devices you used to anchor yourself and make you feel okay about your situation are also equally lacking in meaning. As a child, we all just accept our environment and relish in it, enjoying existence unquestioningly, but as we grow up and begin to mature we get to the point where we can see the truth about ourselves (that we are ephemeral organisms which don't have the capacity to learn anything about our origins." "We arrive at this place of no return" - innocence is lost, you can never return once this realization has set in. We realize that we have been deceived by our own minds that we have control and understanding, when in reality there is none. Talking about how everything is relative is acknowledging that all that we know is based off of observations which are based off of observations of other things. Everything is comparable to something else, and everything exists in relativity to other things. It's really all about how YOU look at it. "subservient in total to one's perspective"

General Commentlife is just one big epiphany? what?

this song is saying that epiphany, the sudden supposed realization or understanding of something, often religious, has only led us astray as humans.

real progress only comes from hard long looks at our surrondings, evidence, the scientific method. Not any mystic or profit.

General CommentI agree with soowt... we look at ourselves and see greatness, though we're far from being what we think we are-- we're just giving too much for granted, both in the anthropological and social senses, by leading our lives according to values that are not ours (we don't rationalize them just take them as they come and assume them by inertia). Great song, and as reflexive as usual.

General CommentI was going to say the song speaks of later generations "garbaling" a good concept of earlier generations.i.e. The founding fathers and the monstrosity of a government we have now. But I think its closer to what soowt said I think he nailed it. One thing though it's spelled prophet!

General CommentAlthough it's funny that it was spelled "profit" it's also rather fitting. I mean, isn't that what drives a lot of the so-called progress?
