"X-ray Mind" as written by and John Saunders Barrett Martin....
Do the laughs die when
One such as I run
And allow myself
Time for own true needs

When convincing me
That you're on my team
May not lie to me
But not mentioning

So sit back and have
An hysterical
Laugh at tiny holes
Buy and trade men's souls

X-ray mind reads plenty
Worth no more than pennies

You, they, it or what
Have been fair, I thought
May you never free
You from you or me

See the more I think
I'm afraid to blink
I don't move an inch
Slowly draining me

Hire a spy and bug me
Pimp your friends for money
Rich and growing sicker
Sell the dead ones quicker

General CommentThis is about how the media picks performers apart... I think. They have "x-ray minds" that can see your intentions plain as day

General Commentlol, my name is Angry Sar, but thanks!

I am listening to this song, right now actually and I just wanted to add that in my opinion this is one of those autobiographical songs Layne ever wrote... listen to it, its almost a cry for help. Makes me so sad...

General CommentI don't think this is about the media but rather the record companies. A few lines in particular make me think this.

    "When convincing me
    That you're on my team"

Doesn't seem like he would be talking about the media here. At first glance you could assume that he is talking about his band mates but when you look at these lines in conjunction with my next quote you get a sense of the bigger picture.

    "Buy and trade men's souls"

Although its just business to the execs the music is the soul of the musicians that they sign and release.

    "Rich and growing sicker
    Sell the dead ones quicker"

They get rich from the music obviously but more important is the second line. If the artist dies at the height of popularity aka Kurt Cobain you will sell albums at an even faster rate.

General CommentI used to think this was about someone getting him into drugs, but I never looked into it. The record company idea makes much more sense. Only thing is they have an x ray mind? Is that line sarcastic?
    love the bongos/drums.

General CommentThis song is about fame, the good and the bad, though the lyrics just talk about the bad. When you're famous, everyone wants a piece of you, and don't give a damn about you.

General CommentIt could be interpreted that way. I always heard the familiar tragedy of friends sharing their fatal habit with friends. Tiny holes in good company, but who will sell their soul to the sickness? Ever introduce a friend to what becomes their downfall? It's tough to grip.

My InterpretationLayne is making references to record companies and bad people in general, i guess. also, x- ray mind reads plenty is probably referring to his own spiritually-heightened, intelligent mind. he can see through bullshit

General CommentI think the first part is about rehab and escaping from rehab to do drugs:
"do the laughs die when etc"
Lyne questions whether the docs in rehab are on his side or not:
"when convincing me that you're on my team" etc
Then it's about the media circus and fame, he thought they, whom ever they were, had been fair, also because it was the only way he could feed his habit, but in the end the price was very high.

The song is very much about himself in the end: he's life was also filled with false friend & people he didn't know if he could trust. The x-rey mind thing I guess it's about him reading people and seeing thing clearer while being high.
