"You Can Close Your Eyes" as written by and James Taylor....
Well the sun is surely sinking down
But the moon is slowly rising
And this old world must still be spinning 'round
And I still love you

So close your eyes
You can close your eyes, it's all right
I don't know no love songs
And I can't sing the blues anymore
But I can sing this song
And you can sing this song
When I'm gone

Well it won't be long before another day
We're gonna have a good time
And no one's gonna take that time away
You can stay as long as you like

So close your eyes
You can close your eyes, it's all right
I don't know no love songs
And I can't sing the blues anymore
But I can sing this song
And you can sing this song
When I'm gone

So close your eyes
You can close your eyes, it's all right
I don't know no love songs
And I can't sing the blues anymore
But I can sing this song
And you can sing this song
When I'm gone

General CommentThis is the first time I've heard it and I think it is wonderful. I love how it is written in first person point of view as if it is a letter to someone very close to the singer. These types of songs are much more personal; another good example of this type is four strong winds.

It sounds to me like the singer is directing this towards someone very close to him, but not a partner. The singer in this case sounds like he had some bad times previously maybe due to a love interest, but now he is reassuring someone close to him that he is no longer in a bad way and recognizes that better times are ahead. By telling this person they could sing the song when they are gone, he is saying that although there will be sadness in his absence the person should remember there will be better times ahead and they will meet again someday. The singer achnowledges that he has a limited time-span in this context, and that the other person will be alone after he is gone.

The person who is afraid to close their eyes in this song could be afraid that they are going to lose the singer.

"And no one's gunna take that time away, you can stay as long as you like...."

    It's a song of reassurance.
    Simply wonderful.

General CommentAlthough I have no idea what JT was thinking about when he wrote this song, to me it is a lullaby from a parent to a child. The parent is putting the child to sleep and telling him/her it's ok to close her eyes, as many children are afraid of the dark or being alone. At the same time, it is the parent creating a memory for the child, and assuring her that even after the parent has passed on - many years from now - that it is ok for the child to close her eyes and sleep, and be comforted by the memory of the parent's love. Luckily, there are sure to be many days between now and then that the parent and child can enjoy together.

Of course I am biased because my mom use to sing it to me when she put me to sleep, and I can't hear it without thinking of her!

General CommentThis is the prettiest song, and the lyrics are so beautiful. It's saying that you can be at ease because in a changing world, there's still love. We sing this in dell at the camp I go to, and after the first time I sang it, I loved it. James Taylor writes so many good songs like this

General CommentThis is one of my favorite songs EVER! Makes me happy and sad at the same time. When I went to JT live, this was the song he ended with, and it was perfect! Wish more people knew this one.

General CommentThis is my abosolute favorite song. Listening to it through headphones is incredible. In the middle you hear the main vocal with a background vocal on each side(both JT). The way he uses harmonies and inflection is amazing.
