Never let them see you cry

Because tears will lead you nowhere

And nowhere walks a long and lonely road

Never let the liquid edges fall

Through the cracks of self doubt

Even if the doors are wide open

Assume the room is dark

So if misery likes company

Then why am I alone?

Its cold outside this double bed

Inside a single room

So never let them see you cry

You walked away and left me numb

Rock bottom took the fall

But Id rather feel the pain

Than nothing at all

So if misery likes company

Then why am I alone?

Its cold outside this double bed

Inside a single room

So never let them see you cry

So never let them see you cry

So never let them see you cry

So never let them see you cry

Vamp out

I've spent some time decrypting the latter half of the song, and thought I'd share. The lyrics below come after the last chorus. If anyone has additions/changes, I would welcome them! I've bracketed parts I'm unsure of.

... SO NEVER LET THEM SEE YOU CRYYYYYYYYYY

I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME AND YOU SAID YOU DID

(Never let them see you cry) YOU YOU YOU REALLY HURT ME YOU REALLY HURT ME

(Never let them see you cry) I'M TAKING NO COMFORT TAKING NO TIME YEAH BABY WATCH ME CRY DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL STRONG? DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD?

(Never let them see you cry) PAST MISTAKES BABY OH YEAH [YOU KNOW] YEAH TAKE NO COMFORT TAKE NO TIME

(Never let them see you cry) YOU [NEVER] FOUND YOUR WAY FOUND YOUR WAY [???? IN ME] [???? IN ME]

(Never let them see you cry) YOU REALLY HURT ME [SUCH A BLITHE SUCH A BLITHE]

I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME (Never let them see you cry) I THOUGHT YOU LOVED ME AND YOU SAID YOU DID YOU SAID YOU DID

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
