"Martha" as written by and Tom Waits....
Operator number please.
It's been so many years.
And she'll remember my old voice.
While I fight the tears.
Hello, hello there is this Martha?
This is old tom frost.
And I am calling long distance.
Don't worry about the cost.
It's been 40 years or more.
Now Martha please recall.
And meet me out for coffee.
Where we'll talk about it all.
And those were days of roses.
Poetry and prose and Martha.
And all I had was you and all you had was me.
And there was no tomorrow's.
As we packed away our sorrows.
And we saved it for a rainy day.
And I feel so much older now.
And you're much older too.
Oh how's the husband how's the kids?
You know that I got married too!
Oh lucky that ya found someone.
To make ya feel secure.
Oh cause we were all so young and foolish.
And now we are mature.
And those were days of roses.
Poetry and prose and Martha.
And all I had was you and all you had was me.
And there was no tomorrow's.
As we packed away our sorrows.
And we saved it for a rainy day.
And I was so impulsive.
I guess that I still am.
But all that really mattered then.
Was that I was a man.
I guess that our being together.
Was never meant to be.
Oh but Martha, Martha I love you.
Can't you see.
And those were days of roses.
Poetry and prose and Martha.
And all I had was you and all you had was me.
And there was no tomorrow's.
As we packed away our sorrows.
And we saved it for a rainy day.
And I remember quiet evenings.
Trembling close to you.

General Commentthis is originally by Tom Waits...
Meat Loaf does a great cover of it but still... how could it beat the original? Tom Waits is one of the greatest artists the world will ever know...
    the lyrics are quite obvious...
one of the saddest songs ever written

General CommentI love the lyrics to this song! This guy just can't stop thinking about the love of his life, even though it has been 40 years and he is married. He decides to call her for old time's sake, and they meet and catch up on their lives. This guy will always be in love with Martha, although he knows it wasn't meant to be... I think everyone has a love like that, one that they will never truly, 100% get over.

General CommentEight times out of ten I cry when I hear this song. I used it as my profile song on myspace, and all my friends left me comments saying "I love this song, it made me cry!"

It is hard to choose a best song for someone like Waits, but this surely deserves an honorable mention. It can spark emotion in anybody.
