"Darkness" as written by and Stewart Armstrong Copeland....
I can dream up schemes when I'm sitting in my seat
I don't see any flaws till I get to my feet
I wish I never woke up this morning
Life was easy when it was boring

I could make a mark if it weren't so dark
I could be replaced by any bright spark
But darkness makes me fumble
For a key
To a door
That's wide open

Instead of worrying about my clothes
I could be someone that nobody knows
I wish I never woke up this morning
Life was easy when it was boring

I can dream up schemes when I'm sitting in my seat
I don't see any flaws till I get to my feet
I wish I never woke up this morning
Life was easy when it was boring

General CommentI think it's about being famous - to an extent - and being a singer, a song writer.

General CommentThis song is clearly about being famous but I relate to the song on another level about depression and even suicide. I love this song. It's just great. I found out about this song because it was on Robert Downey Jr's Itunes playlist.

General Comment… and Copeland's 'Darkness' ends the album on a boring repetitive note, which is fine by me, because the song's message itself is 'life is easy when it was boring'.

General CommentOne of my favorite lyric works ever. Such catchy lines! "I could make a mark if it weren't so dark / I could be replaced by any bright spark"... A masterpiece.

General CommentWhen you are famous you are always on the move it seems, and how being a musician and song writer isnt as easy as it sounds, thats what it is sheding light on.

General CommentThis song creates such a sad but beautiful atmosphere around me everytime I listen to it!

At first, it sounds as if it was just describing the feelings of someone who's suffering from a depression at the moment. However, with the lines "I could be replaced by any bright star" and "Instead of worrying about my clothes ..." they make it very clear that it's about the dark sides of being famous.

I also love the line "Life was easy when it was boring" - this is somehow true, I often thought the same during the more exciting but also exhausting periods in my life.

General CommentI also take issue with George's harsh asessment. (though we're each entitled to our repective opinions, thats why we're here)
I think the spare repetitive melody is supposed to be a sort of meditation. A lacrimose meditative song reminding me of places I've ofte n gone, lament when i've finaaly arrived, leave, and immediatley plot my return to. Life's cycle of want to want. The grass seems greener over there- isms.
