"Elsewhere" as written by and Sarah Mclachlan....
I love the time and in between
The calm inside me
In the space where I can breathe
I believe there is a
Distance I have wandered
To touch upon the years of
Reaching out and reaching in
Holding out holding in
I believe
This is heaven to no one else but me
And I'll defend it as long as I can be
Left here to linger in silence
If I choose to
Would you try to understand
I know this love is passing time
Passing through like liquid
I am drunk in my desire
But I love the way you smile at me
I love the way your hands reach out and hold me near
I believe
I believe
This is heaven to no one else but me
And I'll defend it as long as
I can be left here to linger in silence
If I choose to
Would you try to understand
Oh the quiet child awaits the day when she can break free
The mold that clings like desperation
Mother can't you see I've got
To live my life the way I feel is right for me
Might not be right for you but it's right for me
I believe
I believe
This is heaven to no one else but me
And I'll defend it as long as
I can be left here to linger in silence
If I choose to
Would you try to understand it
I would like to linger here in silence
If I choose to
Would you understand it
Would you try to understand

General CommentThis song completely epitomizes my transition from a quiet, shy, introverted high school student--an adolescence plagued by difficulties at home--to a college student discovering who I really was and the person I could be. This helped me get over my fears and do what was right for me. Ahhh, the trials and tribulations of teenagers...lol

"Oh the quiet child awaits the day when she can break free
the mold that clings like desperation
Mother can't you see I've got
to live my life the way I feel is right for me
might not be right for you but it's right for me..."

This verse says it all, and all of Sarah's music, especially this one, has helped me immensely. She is an incredible singer, song writer, and entertainer. Be sure to catch her in concert around 2003 or thereafter.

General Commentthis song is phenomenal. sara completely nails it...i think she is talking about how hard it is to search for a place where you are at peace with yourself. she found a place to let go of everything tin her life that hurt her that she had held on to not knowing she could escape it. when she finds this place... she sees it as heaven... a place no one else can touch and where no one else can make her feel as good as she feels here. but everyone else (society, family , freinds) disagree with her heaven and discourage it. it is so disheartening to work so hard to find something succh as peace within your own body and have someone tear your dream, your heaven down, and say it is nothing... she sees how hard this is and tells them(specifically her mother) that although this life isn't good enough for her, it is where she is happy , and that she should try to understand it...

i wonder though.. i heard that sara was homosexual. i wonder if she is trying to express her family's disapproval of it through this song and hoping they will understand that this makes her happy. if anyone can confirm this, please do.

General CommentWhen I was in 9th grade, my English teacher assigned us to bring in a song that we feel very strongly about, that we feel describes us or expresses us in some way.

I chose this song. In the first place, while people see me as loud and outgoing, there is nothing I treasure more than being alone, and finding that "calm inside me, in the space where I can breathe."

And "There is a distance I have wanted to touch upon" -- I feel that, my whole life, I've been searching for the perfect distance between me and others. Close enough to be connected, but far enough away for me to be comfortable and to be alone every now and then. I told my boyfriend about this song, because I want him to understand that even though I love him, I have that quite space where I am alone and don't want to be reached...

General CommentIn this song, I see myself because to everyone else, the things I see as perfect are ones they don't like to see because they're too dramatic or they're too upsetting or controversial and I see it as my heaven. I guess I'm very optomistic. Anyhow, I totally relate to this song and hope it has the same impact on others.

General Comment"I believe this is heaven to noone else but me" i identify with because that can fit anything in your life that you enjoy that someone else dosent, when you have different feelings than someone else has for you.

General CommentI feel this song is about coming to terms with being "different" and exploring your individuality on all levels, without allowing the opinions of others effect your opinion of yourself.

    "I believe there is a
    distance I have wandered
to touch upon the years of
    reaching out and reaching in
    holding out holding in"

It's as if she's been waiting a long time to make the transition between who others wanted her to be, and who she knew she was. and although i really have no idea of sarah's sexuality, other than having read somewhere that she was married to her drummer, I can't shake the suspicion that this one could be in reference to a same sex relationship, seeing how there has to be a connection between the message of the song , and the second verse, which is apparently about some sort of physical aspect of love. Either way, this is an excellent song about breaking free, I love it. :-)

General CommentIt reminds me of someone I love very much, but can't be with because it's really not good for me.

I know this love is passing time
    passing through like liquid
I am drunk in my desire...
but I love the way you smile at me
I love the way your hands reach out and hold me near...

General Commenti thinkt his song talks aout finding you and being okay with it. i so connected with the verse
"Oh the quiet child awaits the day when she can break free
the mold that clings like desperation
Mother can't you see I've got
to live my life the way I feel is right for me
might not be right for you but it's right for me... "
Because how much i have changed since middle school and now in the 10th grade im realising its okay to be me and i shouldnt care what ppl think... alot of Sarah McLachlans' music has this way of totally engulfing me and i can feel what she says and i understand what shes going through even if it hasnt happened to me
