"One Less Set Of Footsteps" as written by and James Croce....
We been runnin' away from
Somethin' we both know
We've long run out of things to say
And I think I better go

So don't be getting' excited
When you hear that slammin' door
'Cause there'll be one less set of footsteps
On your floor in the mornin'

And we've been hidin' from somethin'
That should have never gone this far
But after all it's what we've done
That makes us what we are

And you been talkin' in silence
But if it's silence you adore
Oh there'll be one less set of footsteps
On your floor in the mornin'

Well there'll be one less set of footsteps on your floor
One less man to walk in
One less pair of jeans upon your door
One less voice a'talkin'

But tomorrow's a dream away
Today has turned to dust
Your silver tongue has turned to clay
And your golden rule to rust
If that's the way that you want it
That's the way I want it more
There'll be one less set of footsteps
On your floor in the mornin'

Well there'll be one less set of footsteps on your floor
One less man to walk in
One less pair of jeans upon your door
One less voice a'talkin'

But tomorrow's a dream away
When today has turned to dust
Your silver tongue has turned to clay
And your golden rule to rust
If that's the way that you want it
That's the way I want it more
There'll be one less set of footsteps
On your floor in the mornin'
There'll be one less set of footsteps
On your floor in the mornin'

General CommentI never really took this song as a cheating song. I see it as a this aint gonna work out song. They have both been wanting to get out but neither have it in them to say it. You know when a relaitonship is getting sour and its time to leave, but that little part of you wants to hang on. This song rocks. It is also an excellent breakup song.

General Comment"One less" set of footsteps seems to imply that there were multiple sets of footsteps going in and out of this girl's bedroom. One less pair of jeans, one less voice, one less man, etc. By the sounds of it, she's the one who dumped him ("if that's the way you want, that's the way I want it more") but he's letting the girl know she was a cheater and a slut. By leaving her, he'll only be "one less" guy among many.

Most of Jim Croce's breakup songs are heart wrenching, but this one really does seem to just say "adios."
