I danced with the bride of the elephant man and she whispered
You'll always be just a fool in the shadows
Without a face, without a story of your own
You'll always be a rube at the window
Staring like an asshole with a quarter in your fist
In line at the Corinthian Hall
With a ticket, with a ticket in your hand
Do you hear the knocking on the ceiling, on the walls
Well Margaret Fox, I would have kept your secret
I know the secret, I know it's in your toes
We said Margaret are you the one, or should we look for another
And then we chased you, we chased you from the hall
And then we chased you, we chased you from the hall
John Merrick your prayers, your prayers are all heard first
Margaret Fox, I would have kept your secret, your prayers are all heard first
All heard first
You'll always be just a fool in the shadows
Without a face, without a story of your own
Of your own
Staring like an asshole with a quarter in your first
Tell me John, tell me I'm forgiven
Don't be angry when you meet your maker

General CommentJohn Merrick was "The Elephant Man". He was infected with a rare genetic disease that caused lumpy tumors made of bone to sprout all over his body.

Margaret Fox was one of three sisters who claimed to be able to communicate with the spirits. One of the things they could get the spirits to do was knock on the walls. After the oldest of the sisters stole most of the money, Margaret and the other sister revealed that the whole thing was an act. Margaret made the knocking sounds by popping her toe joints.

The only message I get from the song, though, is the Devils saying that even though these people were 'freaks', at least they have a story worth telling... and that's why we actually despise them. But, the Devils know, and that's why they're asking The Elephant Man for forgiveness.

General Commentyeah ok so john merrick was the elephant man like the last guy said. and had the whole genetic disorder that caused him to look really strange and contorted.

the corithian hall was where people tested and studied the fox sister's publicly to find out whether they were lieing about being able to talk to demons and that they werent just tricking people. the cost to veiw the test was 25 cents, which i found out by a quick read of google results.

i basicaly agree with pscico on the message of the song and the facts

My InterpretationDont know how deep the Devils intended this song to be but it seems to me to be about the tendency for society to build up people as curiosities, freaks, celebrities, only to then enjoy tearing them down. "Without a face or story of your own" "and then we chased you from the hall" "are you the one or should we find another?"
Countless celebrities or idols are praised and celebrated until their time is up then they are discarded, but the narrator seems to be empathizing saying he would've kept the secrets, we're your friends, he might have stuck around past the "sell by" date.
