She sings from somewhere you can't see
She sits in the top of the greenest tree
She sends out an aroma of undefined love
It drips on down in a mist from above

She's just the girl, she's just the girl
The girl you want
She's just the girl, she's just the girl
The girl you want

You hear her calling everywhere you turn
You know you're headed for the pleasure burn
But the words get stuck on the tip of your tongue
She's the real thing but you knew it all along

She's just the girl, she's just the girl
The girl you want
She's just the girl, she's just the girl
The girl you want

Look at you with your mouth watering
Look at you with your mind spinnin'
Why don't we just admit it's all over
She's just the girl you want

She's just the girl, she's just the girl
The girl you want
She's just the girl, she's just the girl
The girl you want

She sings from somewhere you can't see
She sits in the top of the greenest tree
She sends out an aroma of undefined love
It drips on down in a mist from above

She's just the girl, she's just the girl
The girl you want
She's just the girl, she's just the girl
The girl you want

Look at you with your mouth watering
Look at you with your mind spinnin'
Why don't we just admit it's all over
She's just the girl you want

She's just the girl, she's just the girl
The girl you want
She's just the girl, she's just the girl
The girl you want
She's just the girl, she's just the girl
The girl you want
She's just the girl, she's just the girl

    My Interpretation

The song is about an atmosphere which constantly infuses us with ideals of what is beautiful and desirable. We think that the object of our desire is just waiting for us to find it and have it for ourselves. We spend our time and effort trying to attain it. But in reality, it is unattainable because it doesn't really exist.

I've read that musically this was their attempt to write a "My Sharona". Which is kind of interesting because the lyrics basically have the exact opposite message.

The song is full of euphemism for getting stoned (or, “getting high on life”, if you prefer.) Like a dream, or a great song, or a woman, you can’t really express in words what is so great about it (on the tip of your tongue) because it’s temporarily euphoric beyond words — just like that girl you want. The subtle point to be made is to just give up, don’t worry if you’re fat or a geek or whatever (see orig music video) because pleasuring burning (and watching mindless TV) is “just the girl you want” (or, “just relax and dig the moment”, if you prefer.) But, it’s delivered in a jittery paranoid voice; a kind of artistic “untrustworthy narrator” sketchy tone, and over stylized … to my mind implying irony/sarcasm, that what you think is great right now is just illusory emotion and you’re being lead down the garden path (perhaps, like all young people are — so that’s okay.) Indeed, this silly (but great) pop song is “just the girl you want”, told to us via a kind of hypnotic command. (Especially to an audience half stoned or generally looking for alternative ways of thinking or seeing artistic expression and performance.)

Wow, no one's commited on this kick-ass little song? Shame.

Anyway, I'm currently dating the lead singer/guitarist of a punk-rock band and I have convinced her to add this song to their preformances because every time I hear it I think of her.

I take the song to mean that every guy puts the girl he likes on some pedestal and pines about how wonderful she is, but to the rest of the world she's not so special, hence she's "just the girl, the girl you want". Of course she's special in your eyes, because you want her so bad, but you're not able to see reality. You're seeing your fantasy come true, etc.

    I don't know...

I truly believe this is about every guy that ever wrote a pop/rock song about a girl. Just a real clever mockery.

My favorite version of this song is the one for the music video, the only difference is its basically just a little faster

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Cajun Girl
Little Feat
Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
