"Cut Here" as written by Robert James Smith, Simon Gallup, Roger O'donnell, Perry Bamonte and Jason Toop Cooper....
"So we meet again!" and I offer my hand
All dry and English slow
And you look at me and I understand
Yeah it's a look I used to know
"Three long years and your favorite man
Is that any way to say hello?"
And you hold me like you'll never let me go

"Oh c'mon and and have a drink with me
Sit down and talk a while..."
"Oh I wish I could and I will!
But now I just don't have the time"
And over my shoulder as I walk away
I see you give that look goodbye
I still see that look in your eye

So dizzy Mr Busy, too much rush to talk to Billy
All the silly frilly things have to first get done
In a minute sometime soon, maybe next time, make it June
Until later doesn't always come

It's so hard to think "It ends sometime
And this could be the last
I should really hear you sing again
And I should really watch you dance"
Because it's hard to think
"I'll never get another chance
To hold you to hold you"

But chilly Mr Dilly, too much rush to talk to Billy
All the tizzy fizzy idiot things must get done
In a second, just hang on, all in good time, won't be long
Until later

I should've stopped to think, I should've made the time
I could've had that drink, I could've talked a while
I would've done it right, I would've moved us on
But I didn't, now it's all too late
It's over, over
And you're gone

I miss you, I miss you, I miss you
I miss you, I miss you, I miss you so much

But how how many times can I walk away and wish "If only"
But how many times can I talk this way and wish "If only"
Keep on making the same mistake
Keep on aching the same heartbreak
I wish "If only"

But "If only"
Is a wish too late

My InterpretationThis was posted by an anonymous person on Lyricinterpretations. I think it sums it up. I haven't seen a better explination.

    Here:

"Cut here" was written for a friend of the band (Billy McKenzie) who committed suicide in 97. Robert Smith believed it would be the last song written by the band, therefore the title.
It's about two best friends grown apart with time, who meet again by coincidence. One friend is really happy to see the other and greets him warmly ("Three long years and your favorite man, is that anyway to say hello?! And you hold me... Like you'll never let me go..."), expecting to "sit down and talk a while". But the other is busy with daily obligations and asks to postpone it. But the friend knows they really won't have another chance to grow close again, as they are already distant:
"And over my shoulder as I walk away I see you give that look goodbye"
Looking back, the other regrets being busy with things that didn't really matter like an old friend does, and not stopping and taking the time to enjoy and cultivate their friendship. He regrets not making time for his friend so he could go on with his routine, always betting there would be time for them to catch up in the future, after everything was taken care of... "Until later doesn't always come." And it didn't come, for both the band and the subject in the song.
So, the song is about this person thinking back and bitterly regretting not doing more for their friendship, and also how he misses his friend and how he really liked him, now that he thinks of it.
I think the most heartbreaking pieces are:
"It's so hard to think it ends some time
And this could be the last
I should really hear you sing again
I should really watch you dance
Because it's hard to think I'll never get another chance
To hold you... To hold you."
    "I miss you
    I miss you
    I miss you
    I miss you
    I miss you
    I miss you so much...
How many times can I walk away and wish 'if only'?
How many times can we talk this way and wish 'if only'?
Keep on making the same mistake
Keep on aching the same heartbreak
    'I wish', 'if only'...
But 'if only' is a wish too late..."
This is where he says that people always put daily schedule and obligations and chores in front of enjoying a friend's company, and so they keep growing apart from each other and becoming simply acquaintances, suffering the same heartbreak over and over... This song is ultimately about how you never know what tomorrow may bring, so you should enjoy and take care of the people you love while you still have them with you, because you never know which hug will be the last.

General CommentThis song was written by Robert about the suicide of friend and Associates singer Billy MacKenzie in 1997. Though in typical Rob Smith fashion, he molded it into a broken love song...just shows you, Cure songs are too deep to be taken at surface value ;)

General Commentholy hell this song hurts me. in my mind, songs about regret are the hardest to hear, because they make you think about mistakes you've made. i've got such a bitter-sweet relation with this song...cause it brings tears to my eyes, but it means so much to me. like, you can't stand it...but you can't stop it.

well anyway, i think everyone has had a great thing go, and loss invites regret, and regret invites depression.

    i love her so much...but now she's gone :(

i'm such a whiney emo kid...

General Commentthis song reminds me of my grandmother in an odd way. I never got a chance to say goodbye to her and took everytime i saw her for granted. she died in early june of 1999 and i still havent gotten over it. it hits home a lot

General Commentthe 1st time I heard this song, I froze. this song absolutely, without a doubt is the story of me and my ex. we tried, but b/c of bad timing and other things we never could get it right. I think about him (skp) occassionally, and wonder if he thinks of me when he hears this song. I hope so

General CommentTo me it sounds like his singing about someone who died, (obviously; hence the suicide of a friend thing) It reminds me of how people take their love ones presence for granted, and how they only relise how much they mean to them when thier gone. And how hes saying i should have stopped to think, i should have taken the time..now your gone its too late..etc. For instance when you loose someone, either through a breakup, when someone moves away or even when someone dies it really makes you think how at the time you didnt relise how important those times you spent together were..until their gone.
