I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
You know after listening to this song I feel it fits perfectly for a soldier deployed to a war zone. Its crazy the life experiences we have over here. Were not normal, especially after we come back from what we have seen.

I interpert the first part of this as saying, that its normal to us what we see and have expirenced. but just dont wanna talk about it. It might be normal to us, but a lot of the things I have seen and done i dont ever wanna remember or have to explain to any one. The second part of this I think means that we all just wanna find someone we want to be with and run away from the stuff weve done.

All of us soldiers over here are thinking of someone else, we all feel the same way, but nobody talks about it. We think about it every day but we just dont talk about it. We are lonely, how do we fix this? We simpky cant.

I think this part of the song is saying you don't owe us anything. We get it we volunteered for it. We tell you everything is going great, when in fact we are just saying that to make you not worry, but its phony as hell. But realize the things we have done you will never understand. Try and accept this, because when we get done with this war we will be different, and we wont exactly know how to deal with it. So just give us some room and let us figure it out.

Everyone over here is so far detached from reality. Its like this life is fake when we are deployed. After a while you cant even stand to be around the great friends that you have. If you see them everyday for a year you will get tired of them. Its not the person or family that you love, so you end up hating each other for no reason. As soon as you are on the way home everything goes back to "normal".

You miss home and normal things more then anyone you could ever imagine. You start feeling more detached from everything that you ever knew. Around about month 8 or 9 of the deployment, it feels as if there is no going back to anything normal. Its just incomprehensible the enormity of the situations that we are put in. The stress will eventually wear you down, break you, and for a little while even make you give up all hope of anything normal.
The fact that you picked this song to write about and place it in comparison with going to war means that you are a thinker. Keep thinking and seek the truth about life. We are free individuals who seek love, not hate and violence. Its hard to see because our leaders in society show us that it is a good thing to win and to fight all the time. That we do it for just causes. They are using us to get what they want. Power and control. <br /> You gained a life in the military but your brain is still functioning and seeking the good of life. I am sorry but it is not in the military. Its to be who you are and to be peaceful and loving and caring. I bring myself to tears saying this to you because I had hate in my heart so much in my life until I found out that God is Love and that we can be our own person and lead our own lives free from outside influence if we want to. Anyways, your post struck a cord with me and I hope you read my post and dont take anythin I say as condescending. I want people to have the same awakening as I have. It feels good.
First of all, thanks for your service. And I'll try to say this as respectfully as possible, but no, no.. that is not even close to what this song is about my friend. It seems that just about every song on here people think has to do with military or drug abuse or religion. Not the case. Glad you can get something out of these lyrics, but that is really not at all what he's talking about.
