"Under Par" as written by Edward Carrington Breckenridge, James Riley Breckenridge, Dustin Michael Kensrue and Teppei Teranishi....
You set bar too high
Your expectations have become my failure
A shell you see so shallow but deep inside
My heart beats just the same as yours
The same blood through these clean veins

Can't you see that I'm in pain
It seems my life is always under par
What can I say to change your mind about what I am
Others can see what was hidden from your sight
A kid with courage and heart and his eyes open wide
An inner beauty and a bright light
My focus is not yours

I set my sights on new horizons and let my soul have scope
Can't you see that I have my own dreams
And though they're not the same as yours
They hold value to me, tell me why can't you see
I'm not the means to mend your past regrets
What can I say to change your mind about what I am
Others can see what was hidden from your sight
A kid with courage and heart and his eyes open wide

Inner beauty and a bright light
Judged for how I look, not for the good that I have done
I try the best I can, but it seems that I'm not the perfect son
Shaped by God, and my volition
And the seeds that you have sown
But I ask you once again
When does my life become my own?

General CommentWhy is it that I can't look at any Thrice lyrics on this website without seeing people arguing about whether or not it is a Christian song?

General CommentEven though I am not an extremely strong christian, this song is still very powerful to me. My life story.

General Commentthis song isn't necessarily about dustin's christianity. yes, he is christian, but even he says that he doesn't like to preach his religion though his lyrics.

i'm sure this song could apply to a lot of situations. basically just about how he's trying to do what he wants to do and people are criticizing him for it in some way.. damn good song. well, damn good cd. but the illusion of safety is coming.

    buy the illusion of safety.

General CommentYeah, I agree. Thrice aren't a Christian band. No.... they're not! I think they're an awesome band with a great sound and a POSITIVE message. If you don't want to listen to positive music, that's fine. If you don't want to listen to Christian music, that's fine, too. I don't think this song or any of Thrice's songs are really considered Christian; they're just based on faith and the band's own experience. Really. The lyrics can really relate to anyone, whether you're Christian or not. Generally, everyone goes through problems. Try to be positive in life. Damnit.

General CommentThough different from the christian undertheme of this song, it reminds me of some problems i have at home with my parents wanting me to be something im not. Hence "you set the bar too high" and "my focus is not yours" "when does my life become my own." etc. etc. I dunno, its just MY meaning, everyone's is differn't. Awsome band btw...
