I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Watching and waiting
For a friend to play with
Why have I been alone so long
Mole he is burrowing his way to the sunlight
He knows there's some there so strong
'Cause here there's lot of room for doing
The thing you've always been denied
Look and gather all you want to
There's no one here to stop you trying
Soon you will see me
'Cause I'll be all around you
But where I come from I can't tell
But don't be alarmed by my fields and my forests
They're here for only you to share
'Cause here there's lot of room for doing
The things you've always been denied
So look and gather all you want to
There's no one here to stop you trying
Watching and waiting
For someone to understand me
I hope it won't be very long
For a friend to play with
Why have I been alone so long
Mole he is burrowing his way to the sunlight
He knows there's some there so strong
'Cause here there's lot of room for doing
The thing you've always been denied
Look and gather all you want to
There's no one here to stop you trying
Soon you will see me
'Cause I'll be all around you
But where I come from I can't tell
But don't be alarmed by my fields and my forests
They're here for only you to share
'Cause here there's lot of room for doing
The things you've always been denied
So look and gather all you want to
There's no one here to stop you trying
Watching and waiting
For someone to understand me
I hope it won't be very long

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example:
"'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
Blue
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
An utterly amazing song from the deepest part of our longing for connection. The person watching and waiting is our self, yearning for freedom from a sense of isolation.
Mole is a powerful metaphor for our drive towards fulfillment and meaning. Our wish to accomplish our highest potential; to become enlightened.
From such attainment (enlightenment) comes freedom. Knowing that we have always been connected to a divine self that experiences unconditional love (lots of room for doing the things you've always been denied).
(Soon you will see me...) Soon we will attain this freedom and experience all of creation as one, and we will want to share it with others.
(Watching and waiting For someone to understand me) - This is our separate, isolated self again, suffering with the illusion of aloneness. The ordinary view of the world.
(I hope it won't be very long) - This is a prayer for enlightenment.
@pinyonj This is exactly my take on this song except more about our human journey on this earth - not necessarily a quest for enlightenment.

For a long time in my life, before I met my husband, I used to feel this way. I cried every time I heard it. I yearned for both the connection and freedom that the song describes. I wanted so much to be understood - to know that I was not alone in my odd uniqueness.

Now I have learned that I don't need that external validation (although my ego still likes to be stroked from time to time). That the most important validation comes from self. That said, human beings are social animals and we don't do well when we are isolated. We need connection to stay sane.

This is my favorite Moody Blues song - still - after all of these years. So poignant - and apt.

@pinyonj
Your interpretation of this song is perfect, exactly my thoughts, had to write you and tell you that your words have touched me and have enlighten my soul, thank you.
@pinyonj
Wow well said.
You nailed the meaning.
And I truly mean it.
I totally agree while attaching more significance to: those things you've always been denied, to me denoting any oppressors wishing to keep people deluded, disabled, and ignorant of their true freedoms and power (and yes, ultimately only in one's own mind in my belief), the elimination of which would connect people "as one" as some say. Probably the most soulful beautiful spiritually liberated description of "Ascension" I've ever heard put to song.
