"Gunning Down Romance" as written by and Daniel/hayes Jones....
Love and other moments
Are just chemical reactions in your brain
And feelings of aggression
Are the absence of the love drug in your viens

In your veins
Love come quickly
Because I feel my self esteem is caving in
It's on the brink

Love come quickly
Because I don't think I can keep this monster in
It's in my skin

Love and other socially acceptable emotions are morphine
They're morphine
Cleverly concealing primal urges often felt but rarely seen
Rarely seen

Love I beg you
Lift me up into that privileged point of view
The world of two
Love don't leave me

Because I console myself that
Hallmark cards are true
I really do

I'm gunning down romance
It never did a thing for me
But heartache and misery
Ain't nothing but a tragedy

Love don't leave me

Take these broken wings
I'm going to take these broken wings
And learn to fly
And learn to fly away
And learn to fly away

I'm gunning down romance

General CommentI can tell just by reading that the writer was going through a bad time. Obviously a significant relationship is completely gone, and he's feeling the anger and resentment that most do when something happy leaves you forever.

General Commenti luv this song~ it kinda gives me a creepy feeling tho. it sounds like darren is in a lot of pain, as in just going thru a really bad time, he sings it with a lot of emotion

General CommentI'm suspecting that he wrote this shortly after his wife and him divorced, and he says he's a romantic at heart, and he says he's gunning it down as he sees it as doing him harm. but yes he sounds hurt and angry.

General CommentI positively adore this song, it's definately in my top3 SG songs. It's dark and just different from so many of their other tunes but completely believable at the same time and they can pull the style off well. I wish they would have written more in this direction.

I don't think it's about one specific breakup/event in that sense. But it works incredibly well as just this overall feeling you get after thinking one too many times about the bad side of love, how it burns you. Eventually you get bitter and start to thinking what is love? You tear it down to the most basic unfeeling level which is that it's technically just 'chemical reactions in your brain'. He's begging love to come rescue him from these thoughts.

    I'm gunning down romance
It never did a thing for me
    But heartache and misery
    Ain't nothing but a tragedy

This song gives me the shivers. I know what it's like to feel like this. Amazing stuff.

And yeah Darren was married to a woman named Colby for a period of time. They were college sweethearts I believe?

General Commentthis is probably one of savage gardens darkest songs, it's so emotional, like all their songs, and i'm pretty sure it is about Darren breaking up with his wife. the first few times i heard it i never really appreciated it fully, but over the past few years, it's meant more and more to me, i supose, now that i'm older i can relate to it more, well, that's my two cents anyway

General Commenti really like savage garden. theyre not my style at all, i dont know what it is. maybe its just this song. and 2 beds and a coffee machine. but the lyrics of this are just so bitter toward love. its only a reaction in your brain, and such. its so real. saying goodbye to love, the way we all do after getting shit on. but of course romance is beautiful, and of course we all find the habit again...........
