For to see my depth of sorrow
You are not allowed to follow me
Into this town square
And then run away

Evil angel with your cleft tongue
When you kissed me
On this town square
All the lights came on at sunset
Thought you'd stay

Evil angel bearing apples
When you kissed me
On this drawbridge
As the boats do
How was I to know you'd flee

Tear down these monuments
Bury the coat of arms
And build for me a factory

Evil angel when you're faced with hatred's
Daggers in my honor
You're no match no scratching hearts that no longer bleed

Oh Evil angel tear down the monuments
Oh Evil angel bury the coat of arms
And rebuild for me these memories

For to see my depth of sorrow

General Comment"Evil angel bearing apples / When you kissed me..." These lines show that the subject was seduced. He wanted maybe intimacy or an emotional connection, but the villain used the subject and left him in misery, as shown in the line "How was I to know you'd flee". So the song having to do with rape makes sense.

Last, the lines "Evil angel when you're faced with hatred's / Daggers in my honor..." might show that the subject expects or wants the villain to be hit with remorse or some other retribution.

Everything about this song is so deeply haunting.

General CommentI agree, very dark and cold and emotionally driven. I can't figure it out, but I am blown away by it.

General CommentI think it might have something to do with Wainwright's rape when he was a teenager. That's why this song gives me chills. D:

General CommentOkay I can't for the life of me remember where I read this (probably on another one of his songs on this site) but apparently this was written about a guy who essentially seduced him, then they made out in a town square (referenced in the song) then disappeared and never called him again... dick move. so he wrote a song about it.
