"Sanctuary" as written by and . Madonna Anne Preven....
Surely whoever speaks to me in the right voice
Him or her I shall follow

Who needs the sun, when the rain's so full of life
Who needs the sky
It's here in your arms I want to be buried
You are my sanctuary

Who needs the sun, when the rain's so full of life
Who needs the sky, when the ground's open wide
It's here in your arms I want to be buried
You are my sanctuary

Who needs a smile, when a tear's so full of love
Who needs a home, with the stars up above
It's here in your heart I want to be carried
You are my sanctuary

Who needs the light, with the darkness in your eyes
Who needs to sleep, with the stars in the sky
It's here in your soul I want to be married
You are my sanctuary

And the earth was void and empty
And darkness was upon the face of the earth
Is all of this pain so necessary
You are my sanctuary

Surely whoever speaks to me in the right voice
Him or her I shall follow
As the water follows the moon, silently

Who needs the sun (With fluid steps)
Who needs the sky (Around the globe)
Who needs to sleep (I hear your voice)
You are (You are) my sanctuary
You are (You are, you are)
You are (You are) my sanctuary

General CommentThe spoken part is from a Walt Whitman poem.

This is definitely one of my favorite Madonna songs. It's so beautiful. I think it's meaning is fairly self-explanatory, though.

General CommentSimply deep, pure love for another person. Nothing matters as long as you have them.

General CommentIt is about her loyalty to baphomet, the dualistic god that she worships, (Is all of this pain so necessary) He controls all good and bad things.
Who needs the light, with the darkness in your eyes
Who needs the sky, when the ground's open wide (baphomet is often mistaken for the devil)
And the earth was void and empty
And darkness was upon the face of the earth
Surely whoever speaks to me in the right voice (when envocing spirits (or demons) they come through in different forms and personalities and voices. (shapeshifters if you will)
Him or her I shall follow (baphomet is neither him or her he is both)
As the water follows the moon, silently Who needs the sun [with fluid steps]
Who needs the sky [around the globe]
Who needs to sleep [I hear your voice]
All about her internal love for her spiritual connection to herself.

MemorySanctuary is one of Madonna's most beautiful songs. Even when the lady is both vibey and spiritual, she is happy and sad all at once. Madonna Cries in This Song! Sanctuary-One of Madonna's true keepers and underrated too. Madonna found her own voice in this song. For Madonna, Evita and Lola were beckoning. Madonna is Love! Love You Madge!
