"Promise To Try" as written by and Madonna Louise Ciccone Madonna Ciccone....
Little girl don't you forget her face
Laughing away your tears
When she was the one who felt all the pain

Little girl never forget her eyes
Keep them alive inside
I promise to try, it's not the same

Keep your head held high, ride like the wind
Never look behind, life isn't fair
That's what you said, so I try not to care

Little girl don't run away so fast
I think you forgot to kiss, kiss her goodbye

Will she see me cry when I stumble and fall
Does she hear my voice in the night when I call
Wipe away all your tears, it's gonna be all right

I fought to be so strong, I guess you knew
I was afraid you'd go away, too

Little girl you've got to forget the past
And learn to forgive me
I promise to try, but it feels like a lie

Don't let memory play games with your mind
She's a faded smile frozen in time
I'm still hanging on, but I'm doing it wrong
Can't kiss her goodbye, but I promise to try

General CommentIt's obvious because in the movie Truth or Dare, when she went to visit her mother's grave, this song was about her mother's loss and she felt very sad becuase she did not know how she died.

    General CommentDearest Sunflower,
Madonna often confirms how the death of her mother influenced her life. Her Mother was an Angel for her, she lost the person who loved her mostly and unconditionaly. She talks lovingly to herself as a small girl as every psychologist teaches their patience after a trauma in their childhood not yet digested.

General CommentFor myself, personally, this song is beautifully bittersweet b/c it makes me think of my oldest sister. She essentially had to forfeit her childhood to our father. Essentially, they had an agreement where if she kept silent about his sexual abuse of her, he wouldn't do the same to the 3 younger sisters. She sacrificed her first 21 years in order for her sisters to escape the monster's madness. She was around age six when the abuse first began, but our father didn't tell us the truth until 35 years later. Some of the words & lyrics Madonna wrote in this song never fail to make me think of my sister's childhood & what she surrendered in order for us to escape the abuse.

MemoryPromise to Try is a beautiful and sad Madonna tune that means a lotto her. The most beautiful song in Rock and the English language! Obviously, Madonna is Crying and Sad in this brilliant Ciccone ballad in which Madge forgives her mother. Maddy has every right to cry her tears in Promise to Try. I will never forget this song! Thank You Madonna Ciccone for this brilliant and touching Detroit Masterpiece. Even Rays of Light need to Live to Tell now and then! Madonna, you make me Proud! Namaste, Lady Ciccone! A TRUE WORK OF ART!

General CommentIt;'s obvious! Madonna's mother died and the song is about how Madonna felt after she died. Examples from the lyrics: Never forget her mothers face and keep it inside, keep her head held high for the challenges in life that await her, never look behind and it's not fair that her mother died, but life isn't fair, will her mom see her when she falls? Will her mom her hear when she cries? Her mom is telling her that it is going to be okay. She fought to be strong. Never forget the past and forgive her mother for dying. She promises to try!
