“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.

I disagree a little with how the people above described the song. I don't think the singer has totally gotten over the girl on his own....he's still talking himself through it. She's long gone, and he's trying to make himself feel better by putting a closure spin on it from his end. I like how this song is a sort of kiss-off from someone who's already been kissed off. It's like...."I'm going to stop thinking about you...really....I am...." It's half-convincing....because he has to convince himself that he doesn't care anymore. :) It's cute and nerdy and makes me smile.
I think this song is obviously about a guy trying to get over a girl. But even after she's evidently moved on, he still hasn't. He really wants to move on with the rest of his life, but he can't yet. "And I will consider you gone" seems like he's in denial. He thinks that he's able to let go of her, when he hasn't yet. But he's definately trying to move on without her...
I remember an interview with Ben, and I think "Gone" came up. It is based in less romance than you think. Ben was writing songs in a hotel and was very sick. He was stuck on a sofa and began watching this multiple day event of a talk show like Maury. The topic was "Who is the daddy?" There was a woman on there that had a baby, and she said two men could be the father. One guy, a guy the woman hated, was this man who said I want to support you and the child even if it isn't mine. The other guy, the person the woman wanted to be the father, said it wasn't him and didn't want anything to do with her or the child. So the day arrived and the father would be revealed. Ben, as everyone, was rooting for the man who wanted to be this great father. Maury brought out the envelope, the crowd went silent and the father was.... neither man. Everyone was floored, and both men were gone from her life.

I think this song is almost self-explanatory. He gets over her himself and she gets over him by jumping into something with somebody else. He thinks that she should get herself right, and if she doesn't agree, well, there's nothing he can do. She doesn't.
I've always loved this song, and the great 50's sound to it.
Not much to say about it, it's obviously about a guy who's just taking too long to get over a girl. The whole first verse really tells the story... After a year he's finally come to accept that she's gone.
