"Annie Waits" as written by and Benjamin Scott Folds....
And so
Annie waits, Annie waits, Annie waits
For a call
From a friend
The same
It's the same
Was it always the same?
Annie waits for the last time

The clock never stops, never stops, never waits
She's growing old
It's getting late
And so he forgot, he forgot
Maybe not
Maybe he's been seriously hurt
Would that be worse?

Headlights crest the hill
Shadows pass her by and out of sight
(ooh ooh)
Annie sees her dreams:
Friday bingo, pigeons in the park

Annie waits for the last time
Just the same as the last time

Annie says "You see this is why I'd rather be alone."

And so
Annie waits, Annie waits, Annie waits
For a call
From a friend
The same
It's the same
Was it always the same?
Annie waits as the last

Headlights crest the hill
Who will be the one for evermore?
(ooh ooh)
Annie, I could be
If we're both still lonely when we're old

Annie waits for the last time
Just the same as the last time
Annie waits for the last time
Just the same as the last time

Annie waits
But not for me

General CommentSometimes I feel like being alone is safer than being with anyone, and when I heard the line "this is why I'd rather be alone" I just kept rewinding the song over and over again. The ending of this song makes it even more sad to me.

    General CommentThis doesn't have to do w/ any of the lyrics, but some people on the .org messageboard for ben folds have brought something to my attention that i overlooked in this song- at the end after ben is done singing, there are little chime-like notes, which people have said is an imitation of a doorbell ringing... I've never heard this particular ring, but i trust that it exists! :-) in any case, it just makes me wonder- who's ringing the doorbell? could it be annie ringing ben's? ben ringing her's? or another man annie hopes will be perfect but never will be? just a thought! :-}

General CommentGuys, is it just me who sees that:
This song reminds me so much of Nick Hornby's bestseller "Juliet Naked"! Its about a woman called anni who lives pretty much the life that is desribed in this song.
She gets into contact with a famous musician from America (annie is british) whose biography reminds me a lot of Ben Folds. Well, in the end of the story, he thinks about writing a song about annie.

and since nick hornby has dealt with ben folds before and is now working with him, i thought that might be no co-incidende...

    what do you think?

General CommentAnnie is waiting for the perfect man to enter her life and every time someone comes in, he's is less than what she wants. She wants to grow old with someone and she feel that time is slipping her by not knowing that the narrator (singer) who is just a friend is probably the man she's been waiting for all this time. As he's always wanted her.

General CommentAnnie is in love with this guy, but the singer loves her. Annie doesn't love the singer back. The singer is sitting with Annie, who wishes the guy she loves would call her, but he doesn't.... Annie says “You see this is why I’d rather be alone.” That is when he never calls and she gets upset in front of the singer. Annie, I could be, If we’re both still lonely when we’re old ... He's telling Annie that if this guy doesn't come around, he's still going to be there. That's my opinion at least :) .

General CommentGreat song, this is. I like it lots.

In a nutshell-- I think the song's about this girl, Annie who waits and waits for a guy who isnt coming-- while the speaker waits and waits for her.

General CommentGreat song, another of Ben Folds' character sketches.
"Annie waits / For a call / From a friend / The same / It’s the same / Was it always the same? / Annie waits for the last time." Annie is upset in love again, she waits for the call from the man she loves but it never comes. "It's the same" - this is not the first time she's been disappointed.
"The clock never stops...never waits / She’s growing old / It’s getting late / And so he forgot, he forgot / Maybe not /
Maybe he’s been seriously hurt." It's getting too late for romance, Annie hopes he's just forgotten to call and it's nothing more serious than that. But the singer suggests "Maybe he’s been seriously hurt." Maybe the man she waits for is also afraid of romance like Annie, 'once bitten twice shy'. And the singer says he'll be there for her if no one else is. A sad song of a life wasted.

General CommentI feel pretty retarded at the moment. heehee. If you're curious as to why.. just head over to "Ben Folds Five" where Concept informed me how backwards I was. *blush* but here's my same comment in the correct place to be posting it now...
    ---
    this song is great.
..About a guy's observations of a girl who is waiting for that 'special-someone' in her life, yet she is disappointed every time she thinks she might have found that person. she has lost hope in love? This song has so much significance to me it's almost crazy.. I can completely relate to the girl this song is describing.
    ..and so I digress.. :] :
    Disappointed yet again -
"The clock never stops, never stops, never waits
    She's growing old
    It's getting late
And so he forgot, he forgot
    Maybe not
    Maybe he's been seriously hurt
    Would that be worse? "

Fears life/opportunity is passing her by and it will be dull/lonely in the future:
    "Headlights crest the hill
Shadows pass her by and out of sight
    Annie sees her dreams:
Friday bingo, pigeons in the park "

Let-down again, thus if she had no expectations of the one she loves there would be no pain..feels she might be better off without love/companionship:
"Annie waits for the last time
Just the same as the last time

Annie says "You see this is why I'd rather be alone." '

    My favorite line:
    "Headlights crest the hill
Who will be the one for evermore?
    (ooh ooh)
    Annie, I could be
If we're both still lonely when we're old"
.. there is still hope, she is still loved by someone.. she just needs to open her eyes and realize he's right there in front of her.. but..
    "Annie waits
    But not for me.."
perhaps 'Annie' is scared from past disappointment which makes the guy who *truly* loves her feel like he has no chance.. and Annie can't even see the love he has for her since she has decided to put up a barrier due to past
    'disappointment'.

and theeere's my 99 cents of interpretation! hehe. tsk.. I need to learn how to keep things shooooort. ;] oh well.

General CommentI think annie is waiting for the guy of her dreams, and while she waits, the singer, the one person she doesnt think of, is also the person that would be perfect for her. A great song, and a great way to open up this album.
