"On A Beach" as written by and Richard Ashcroft....
Have swam those raging seas
Washed up by an ocean who had tired of me
How I survive
I will never know

This wreck got a home
And a whole lot of hope

I'm out on a beach
Sat on a rock
Thinking of you and the love I've got

I saw the devil's servant
I sent her home
Said bring me you master I don't want his dog

I'm on fire
I'm full of love and new desire

I lit my fire blew my conch
Nobody comes
I built my boat from bamboo
But it sunk

I looked at the sky for vapour trails
Nobody comes

I wrote your name on a tree
Along with the days this is taking you away from me

I'm out on a beach
Sat on a rock
Thinking of you and the love I've got

I saw the devil's servant
I sent her home
Said bring me you master I don't want his dog

I'm on fire
I'm full of love and new desire

I ain't afraid to die
Ain't afraid to die
And here we go
Ain't afraid to die

I'm out on a beach
Sat on a rock
Thinking of you and the love I've got

I saw the devil's servant
I sent her home
Said bring me you master I don't want his dog

General CommentThis guy is getting beat up by love and bad relationships. The sea is symbolic of his love life. He was drowning in is despair, but managed to get himself to land and regroup. He was washed up and beaten, but the only way to win, is to try love again. He is the wreck "...this wrecks got a home [for his heart] and a whole lot of hope."

He is sitting on the rock, evaluating what he lost (his lover) and feeling sorry for himself, but he is also saying I'm not going to get beaten by this; "saw the devils servant, sent her home..." As if to say, if this is all you got, you're not going to keep me down.

No one is answering his call ("blew my conch" [sea shell] to say he is available. Built is boat from bamboo [he is venturing out again in to the 'sea of love' but it he hasn't found someone yet so it sank. He looks at the sky for vapor trails (vapor trails [from an airplane] being a new relationship, but he is still so far away from a new meaningful relationship). But he is full of love, full of new desire, so he is going to try to find love again.

General Commentwow that's a fantastic deconstruction and interpretation of the song! This is my favourite song off the album, it's great to just lye in bed and listen to it :) *$amba*

General Commentthis song has some of the best lines ever: "I wrote your name on a tree along with the days this has taken you away from me" and "i built my boat from bamboo, but it suuuu-nnnk." I love how he sings that last one. classic.
