"The Cowboy Song" as written by and Chuck Mosley Bill David Gould....
Tears fall, discard your innocent dreams
Loves fall, they kinda leave you empty
Leaves fall, the seasons pass you by
And you think that maybe you can fly

Ceilings fall, with each romance you repair
Clouds fall, with each moment of despair
Buildings fall, the pavement is their bed
But what's the last thing that goes through your head

You take the elevator to the top, the next thing you know
There you are standing on the edge
And all the flashing lights and futile cries they're all for you
Now just close your eyes and take that final step

Rains fall, they dampen your will to live
Gods fall, with each pleasure that you give
You fall, and take the whole world with you
But will you even bother to look down

You take the elevator to the top, the next thing you know
There you are standing on the edge
The circumstance it turns you inside out
So we can have peace before you find out what's inside your head

What's inside your head

You take the elevator to the top,the next thing you know
There you are standing on the edge
The circumstance it turns you inside out
So we can have peace before you find out what's inside your head

And all the flashing lights and futile cries
They're all for you, now
Just close your eyes and take that final step
Just close your eyes and take that final step

General CommentI can definitely agree with this song being about suicide. "You take the elevator to the top" implies that he's sort of seen it all and then "just close your eyes and take the final step" is like getting off on the roof and jumping. It makes perfect sense. And I just want to say this is one of Faith No More's best songs. Ever.

General CommentI think maybe, for once, this song doesn't need to be overanalysed. Suicide song.

General Comment^^^^^ that post was entirely too long. However, I agree with it.

Cool song, great organ riffs. Keyboards+rock=all kinds of fun.

General CommentI think it's about depression. I think the suicidal themes are thoughts or fantasies stemming from depression.

The first couple verses are about how hopeless the world feels and how it makes one feel trapped and blind.

The chorus is written as a plan like somebody rehearsing their suicide to themselves, not acting it out.

The third verse is listing more depressing things, but they seem more epic in nature especially "Gods fall" and "You Fall". The last line reminds him that he's somewhat of a coward as he questions if he'll bother to look down.

Through to the end are variants of the first chorus adding an idea. He believes he wants to find peace in death before he finds out what's in his head. Maybe he's afraid to confront himself because he's been through a lot and changed so much that he wants to find peace somewhere without having to rebuild his sense of self.

I believe this song was written as an outlet of suicidal thoughts brought on by depression. Also, the song itself sounds manic like he trying to sound happy as he's singing about why he wants to kill himself and his plan to do it. Perhaps it's a voice in his head that's telling him to do it.

In any case, that's my interpretation of the song.

General CommentI think the jist of the song is about suicide...obiviously I'm not that sure but it seems mike or whoever is obivously really pissed off or depressed and just kinda goes crazy (maybe on drugs? mike was said to be clean?)

1Tears fall, they scarred your innocent dreams

1His tears obiviously fall as he is standing on the edge of a building maybe scarred your innocent dreams could mean he had all thease dreams and places and things he wanted to do and see and it wont work out and its just so innocent he did nothing but hope and dream and all his sadness and anger just envelopes it all it takes control dehumanizes him.

2Loves fall, they kinda leave you empty

3Leaves fall, the seasons pass you by

4And you think that maybe you can fly

2He looses a girlfriend/boyfriend(depends on whos perspective your looking at)

3The line illustrates itself being in a great state depression kinda ostracizes you from the world and life and also any form of suicide or standing on the edge of the building watching all the cars and people pass you by you may feel life is on fast foward and you watching it all before you.

4When your normally ready to end your life, commit suicide you'd maybe feel a little crazy or people may see you that way. Obiviously it seems there is no possible way humans can literally fly so the line "and you think maybe you can fly" shows he is trying to make a shameful excuse to plunge off a building or bieng crazy or maybe on drugs/bieng drunk you may think to yourself I am able to fly or by killing myself I'll get away from my problems (kinda like flying away) or the line can just mean feelings of random(but still suicidal) stupidity and ignorance.
Overall I think this line means just something to say instead of just saying "I'm gonna jump off this building" obivious? I dont know you decide.

5Ceilings fall, with each romance you incur

6Clouds fall, with each moment of despair

7Buildings fall, the pavement is their bed

8But what's the last thing that goes through your head?

5Your life is so messed up and broken that maybe falling ceilings could be a way to illustrate the pain and agony you continue to suffer (your mind collapsing)or this line may mean something simpler like the building is slow collapsing (or roof)
the other part of this line could mean as your life or the building or what ever is collapsing you began to think about all the painful relationships and romances you've had to suffer through and the ceilings collapsing coul represent the pain or the crumbling of each horrible relationship? Again im not totally sure but thats the way I interpret that line.

6kinda obivious again like ceilings falling the world is crumbling the sky is shattering...as you began to feel more and more suicidal and depressed thease sights began to tie into reality or seem real. About watching your life crumble into pieces

7Life crumbling? Buildings? Buildings fall could be a metaphor for your life (the world crumbling and being destroyed) again like last lines...could be actual city or used to illustrate pain and depression through violent actions. Obiviously the citys (or you diving off the building) falls to the ground and splatters onto the pavement being strewn across the street could be both building,you...

8Obvious line...I dont think I need to explain it...

9You take the elevator to the top

    10The next thing you know

11There you are standing on the edge

12And all the flashing lights and futile cries

    13They're left with you now

14Just close your eyes and take that final step

    9another obvious line

    10obvious 11obvious

12 Everything below you everything your watching from high up on the edge of the building (flashing lights...cars,ambulances,police etc.) Futile cries could be all the cries of ppl on the ground below crowds of people laughing, screaming, crying maybe people below or behind screaming at you telling you to stop telling you not to do it but its futile and worthless to you they're worthless to you and there pleads because all your anger and sadness controls you can blocks out everything else but the act of suicide.

13once your dead or as your about to jump off the building all you can remember/hear/have are the cries of loved ones the pleads or just the cries of the city is engraved into your mind. Its all left with you

14obvious just about finally plunged off the building and commiting suicide

15Rains fall, they dampen your will to live

16Gods fall, with each pleasure that you give

17You fall, and take the whole world with you

18But will you even bother to look down?

15 Im guessing its raining out? And maybe the blistering cold and the maybe hail like rain beating against your body. Just being freezing cold would probablly make most people uncomfortable and at this point already were you've basically decided to kill yourself all that anger builds up even more because of the uncomfortable cold feeling your recieving.

16Maybe your losing your faith or the "god of thunder, rain?" all comes crashing down on you. The god or what your precieve god to be comes crashing down on you...your losing your faith? Not to sure...
this wouldnt really have to do with falling off a building but maybe cutting yourself...giving you "pleasure" it relives the pain (in realality brings it) makes you happy to inflict pain on yourself or maybe mentally giving your brain pleasure..thinking about suicide what its going to be like as it happens..when your gone...all ties in with losing your faith and jesus or whatever despises your suicidal actions...really depends on you I guess what you belive and again this line is kinda of blurry..maybe not? thats the way I see it.

17plunging off the building falling and mentally taking the whole world with you maybe you think about your loved ones as you fall...maybe somebody you hate..kinda blurry you decide

18Maybe as your falling you might not want choose to look down...maybe out of fear or just lack of comfort...or maybe you never left the top of the building and some of the earlier lines where just you imagining you falling off and as you still stand in the rain on the edge you may refuse to look down...at your fate?

19You take the elevator to the top

    20The next thing you know

21There you are standing on the edge

22The circumstance it turns you inside out

    23So we can have peace

24Before you find out what's inside your head

    19 obvious 20 obvious 21 obvious

22maybe this whole suicidal circumstance makes you sick maybe you regret it?Or maybe it makes you so sick you just kill yourself right away and end all this stalling...?

23Maybe because of the last line you dont kill yourself and your loved ones are extremely pleased and are now out of a state of panic and now in peace
or maybe that if you choose to jump your death will bring great happiness and joy to many people because alot of society you may have experienced or people you may have met may have hated you, critisized you...etc.and your death brings happiness to them (if thats so it should maybe be"so they can have peace") does it make sense I dont know...I guess from my perspective

24ok now back to if you dont kill yourself your loved ones are happy and greatful and they can now achieve peace and not have to worry as much until you really do find out your life sucks and try to commit suicide?? hmm I think im leaning towards you are regreting this whole suicide thing and your loved ones begin to think "well he isnt gonna do it it will be alright unless he soon decides he cant take it anymore and trys to kill himself" basically you choose the path....

    25What's inside your head!

25obvious...could be fnm is asking what are thinking do you really want to kill yourself? what the hell are you doing!? what is going through your head as you do it or fall...basically "Whats (going through) your head!?"

    26-34 stated above

again im not totally sure but its the best way I could probablly put it into words...I hope this kinda helps its really a great song one of my favorites by them!

General Commentit could be about suicide, or another kind of death, like the death of your former self... moving on or making changes, you take the elevator to the top metaphorically. as if to say, everythings ready for you to make this dramatic change, but do you have the balls to take the final step?

General CommentThis sounds to me as if its about someone has lost everything he cares about in his life and has become disillusioned and suicidal and does not even know what e himself wants as with "Whats inside your head!?"
