"I Hate Myself and I Want to Die" as written by and Kurt Cobain....
Runny nose and runny yolk
Even if you have a cold still
You can cough on me again
I still haven't had my fulfill

In the someday what's that sound?

Broken heart and broken bones
Think of how a castrated horse feels
(Alt: Think about some capsules of horse pills)
One more quirky cliche'd phrase
You're the one I wanna refill

In the someday what's that sound?

Most people don't realize
That two large pieces of coral,
Painted brown, and attached to his skull
With common wood screws can make a child look like a deer

General CommentOkay, in the second verse the lyric should be-

"Think about some capsules of horse pills"

The song really isn't about anything in particular. There are references to someone being sick. There's a quote from a "Deep Thoughts" skit from SNL. The chorus came from God knows where. And that's that.

Kurt threw lyrics together from various places and what fit together, he went with. Such is the case for the majority of Nirvana's songs. He said himself that there USUALLY is no meaning behind any of his songs. Although- some songs have deep, personal meaning. THIS song does not have any philosophical lesson to be learned.

Kurt was very sarcastic and had a deep fascination with biology. These overtones can be found throughout their entire catalogue.

Please people: enjoy his randomness and freedom. Don't overanalyze everything to the point that it becomes boring and childish. I don't think he would have wanted that.

Oh, to me this song is about three minutes long. Three minutes of great talent from all three musicians.

Song MeaningThis song is completely a joke.
Kurt Cobain's last interview was with Rolling Stone magazine on January 27,1994. When the writer asked him, "One of your songs that you cut from In Utero at the last minute was I hate myself and I want to die. How literally did you mean it?" Cobain responded: "As literal as a joke can be. Nothing more than a joke. And that had a bit to do with why we decided to take it off. We knew people wouldn't get it; they'd take it too seriously. It was totally satirical, making fun of ourselves. I'm thought of as this pissy, complaining, freaked out, schizophrenic who wants to kill himself all the time: 'He isn't satisfied with anything.' And I thought it was a funny title. I wanted it to be the title for the album for along time. but I knew the majority wouldn't get it."
There is no deeper meaning. It's a joke.

General CommentTwo words: Heroin withdrawal... after reading the "most unauthorized biography" of Courtney Love, what else could it possibly be? (Heroin is brown, hence the coral part, and the deer part, aka "deer in the headlights" part, must refer to the pin-point "I'm a heroin addict" pupils Kurt sported; also, the book talks about the runny nose coming from heroin withdrawal.)

General CommentTo "jenwill2" and everyone else: The "deer" part is a quote from Jack Handey. He's the guy who did "Deep Thoughts" on Saturday Night Live in the late 80's/early 90's. Look this song up at eeggs.com or search for the Deep Thoughts Archive on the 'net and see Deep Thought #64.

General Commentin the chorus i think he's either saying "in the someday, what's that i saw" or "in the someday, what's that odd sound."

General CommentThe coral part is from that SNL guy who did Deep Thoughts, Jack Handey. The song title came from a joke Kurt had. When people asked Kurt how he was he would always say "I hate myself and I want to die" as a joke. This was supposed to be the name of "Incesticide" but instead got put on that Beavis and Butthead thing.

General Commentthe bands name was never I hate myself and I want do die...what the fuck are you talking about!?!? one of the albums (in utero I believe) was originally supposed to be named this, and have all the original mixs of the songs, and then they were going to release another version called "The Radio Friendly, Unit Shifting" version with the mixes that are on In Utero...the band had alot of names when they were starting out, but this was never one of them
