Wouldn't it be nice if we were older?
Then we wouldn't have to wait so long
And wouldn't it be nice to live together
In the kind of world where we belong?

You know, it's gonna make it that much better
When we can say goodnight and stay together

Wouldn't it be nice if we could wake up
In the morning when the day is new?
And after having spent the day together
Hold each other close the whole night through?

Happy times together we've been spending
I wish that every kiss was never-ending
Wouldn't it be nice?

Maybe if we think and wish and hope and pray, it might come true
Baby, then there wouldn't be a single thing we couldn't do
We could be married
And then we'd be happy

Wouldn't it be nice?

You know, it seems the more we talk about it
It only makes it worse to live without it
But let's talk about it

Wouldn't it be nice?

Goodnight, oh baby
Sleep tight, oh baby
Goodnight, oh baby
Sleep tight, oh baby

General Comment:anyone remember being 14 and so in love??

when the time you had together ran between the early school morning hours and 10:00 pm (at the very lastest)...
the rest was spent glued to the phone--spewing sweet nothings and making big plans...

...when cuddling to the sound of him (or her) passing out on the phone was the closest thing to snuggling up for the night you could hope for with your sweetheart...

when goodbyes lasted 3/4 of the date...

...looking back at the ripe (not so) ol' age of 22 this song, which used to make me long for my then-beau, leaves me with a bit of nostalgia for the times before adulthood...

    ...before my own apartment...

    ...before "my place or yours"...

...before actually having to worry about what my breath smells like,
or what he'll think of me...

....back when i could only imagine what it could be like to wake up in his arms...

    and that was simply enough.

General Comment:its odd thats its always viewed as a happy hopeful love song, brian wilson actually wrote it about a bad time in his marriage with his then with marylin, its quite bitter and sarcastic in some way because its like 'we could get married and then we'd be happy' the irony that they were married and deeply unhappy, they were ment to get married and be blissfully happy but he thought he married the wrong person hence the 'Wouldn't it be nice if we could wake up
In the morning when the day is new
And after having spent the day together
Hold each other close the whole night through' and 'Maybe if we think and wish and hope and pray it might come true' lines

General Comment:What a great song. The ascending melody line always gets me; I never get tired of it. The part that goes upward and finally bursts into "staaaaay together" on that wonderful harmonized high note...oh man. Great stuff.

I have to say I really feel sorry for the kids that post comments here along the lines of, "I usually only listen to punk and emo, but once in a while I like corny old songs like this." Well, congrats for discovering this song, but I consider your punk and emo to be a whole lot more contrived, silly, and yes, ultimately a lot cornier in their own ways than this old song. And where Brian Wilson's song comes from a basis of REAL emotion and REAL feeling, emo is pretty darn fake and calculated. ("Let's start off slow and tortured, then explode into pained, angstful screaming, then take it back down to slow and tortured again...rinse, repeat, for every song on the album.") Pretty corny if you ask me.

General Comment:I love this song. It's exactly how I feel right now. I think that anyone experiencing their first love can relate to it. Its message is so universal. What always gets me is that on the surface the song sounds so happy, yet it's so bittersweet at the same time. The line "You know it seems the more we talk about it, It only makes it worse to live without it" really rings true. I would give anything to be a few years older than I am right now so that I could make my dreams come true. This will always be a favorite of mine, and it will always remind me of my ginger.

General Comment:This song was all about the wish that Brian had to return to his former, simpler days. Teenage years, uncomplicated romance. He was 25 years old, and was beginning to experience the affliction of paranoid-schitzophrenia. Wouldn't it be nice if things were simple again. The only way he could couch his feelings was in the framework of a teen romance.

General Comment:I don't really get the sexual vibe from this song. To me, it's simply about wanting to sleep together, literally. Otherwise, why would he include waking up together? I really think he just wants to sleep with her, whether that includes sex or not.

Song Meaning:It sounds like a long distance relationship. They want each kiss to last forever because in a few hours they will be going back to their state, but if they were older than they could get married and live together and not have to worry.

General Comment:the guy i had a majorly large crush on (more like an obsession, but more deep than the word "crush" can be) for more than three years made me a mix-tape with this song on it, along with, of course, many others. then he went and asked out another girl. they're still together.
