"I Dreamed a Dream" as written by Richard E. Edson, Kim A. Godron, Thurston J. Moore and Lee M. Ranaldo....
[kim]
Look before you leap, okay?
Do you read me?
May all your dreams come true
He's standing by the door
He's got something in his hands
All the money's gone
All the money's gone
The days we spend, go on and on
Shift
Fucking youth
Working youth
May all your dreams come true

A lot of people suffer
From impotence
All the money's gone
The days we spend go on and on
Fucking youth
Working youth
Fucking youth
Working youth
Fucking youth
Fucking youth
Working youth

[lee]
You slept
Did I drift?
Do I dream?
Do you read me?
I'm not speaking
Do you read me?
I dream

I dream

Sound today are you sound today
Are you sound today?
Sound today are you sound today
Are you sound today?
Today
These things don't happen
Automatically
I dream
Edith moves each step
Fucking youth
The days we spent go on and on
I dream
Do you read me?

General CommentYeah, its called "I Dreamed I Dream".

I see two possible meanings. Either way, its the plight of working class youth in dead end mindless monotonous jobs.

It could be about how the government takes more and more money through taxes and yet nothing positive is seen in return. "People suffer from impotence" == government officials.

It's also about being young and stuck in a rut, a dead end job (All the money's gone) which doesn't pay much but is the pinnacle of monotony(The days we spent go on and on). They suffer from impotence, they feel useless. They dream, but their dreams are also impotent.

General Commenti think this song is incredible!
it has that gorgeous, scratchy almost cold atmosphere to it, & the combination of kim's and lee's voices blew me away the first time i heard it.
definitely about bored, unappreciated, insubordinate youth. love it.

General Commentupdate: from the recent sonic youth biography i found out that this song's lyrics are made up of excerpts from lee's journal & lyrics randomly picked out from a magazine (sung by kim), chosen at the last minute.
so i'm not sure anymore whether is supposed to be any underlying meaning or deep connection, except maybe kim's fascination with popular culture and what the vox populi seems to think are important issues (wealth, sex - impotence, etc).
also, lee's first line i think is the faint "edith moves with each step", not "i sleep".
