This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"
I see your wishes on the wall, and that's all right with me
I see you run to make a call, hoping that there's someone free
Your life and my life they don't touch at all, and that's no way to be
We've never seemed so far
What's real? what is true?
I ain't turning my back on you
Where're you goin'? where've you been?
Making wishes, watching dreams
It might be simple, it might be true, I might be overwhelmed by you
You might be empty, the way your eyes just look right through
It's such a mess now anyway, wish fulfillment every day
I don't believe you, now I can't hear a word you say
I see you shaking in the light, reading the headline news
The others they're not quite so bright, we want them to choose you
I could almost see your face tonight, singing simple rhythm'n'blues
You'll always be a star
Shake it baby! come'on scream!
Just see your face in a magazine
Your doubt, it leaves me sore
I can't stand it anymore
It's my favorite shot of you, you look so pretty your eyes were true
I'm still on your side, in spite of everything you do
We're only blood on blood on life, you paint me pictures every night (?)
Come wish beside me, don't you know you know what's right
I see you run to make a call, hoping that there's someone free

Hayalperest
Hayalperest
This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere.
In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
to me personally, this song is about someone who is infatuated with another person, and the other person is just too "big" to settle down with anyone. They have to be on the go, hence the third and fourth lines where they are running to make a call to be with someone new. Their vibrance makes them infinitely attractive, but after a while they start to lose their appeal when you see their might not be something past the glitz and beauty, as evident in the fourth stanza. But, regardless, there is something special about this person, and it leaves you broken, frustrated and confused, wishing you could be a part of their life.
wish fulfillment is a term that sigmund freud used to describe the unconscious desires during the dreamstate, meaning that dreams were basically wishes. i've loved this song for half of my life. i was always left the impression that the song is about the trappings of fame, and the desire to be close to someone yet they're self-involved and wrapped up in their own world, which leaves the protagonist unimpressed; i.e. "leaves me sore, i can't stand it anymore." however, it seems as though he still loves her despite her ego-centric ways.
it's really a beautiful song. definitely my favorite sonic youth song.
I think it is a new version of Pictures of Lily by The Who. Pictures of Lily is about a guy who falls in love with some pictures of a girl that he does not know. I think this can be the same here.
@Temujin YES! Someone who was thinking along the same lines! I actually looked this song up because I wondered if anyone thought it was anything like Space Dye Vest by Dream Theater (a guy obsessed with a girl in a magazine). I forgot all about Pictures of Lily...
I agree that it is about being in love wth someone that you don't know, maybe a famous musician?
I agree with most said. I can relate to it at the mo, it such a great riff too.
I love this song. It sounds so hearfelt to me..probably my favourite Sonic Youth song. I like "IHaveAnOpinion"'s interpretation of the lyrics.
I agree that it's about being in love/infatuated with someone you do not know. It's a theme most of us can relate to and it's also an awesome Sonic Youth song. The best SY song with a Lee Ranaldo vocal in my humble opinion.
First post ever! I actually have always thought this song was about a prostitute...the "shaking in the light, want them to choose you" section sold me on that. These other comments are probably right on but I'll always think of it as a man observing a prostitute...
Its leave me sore btw.
I think it's about someone who doesn't want to be famous.
