"The Mob Rules" as written by and Anthony Iommi Terence Butler....
Close the city and tell the people that something's coming to call
Death and darkness are rushing forward to take a bite from the wall, oh

You've nothing to say
They're breaking away
If you listen to fools
The Mob Rules
The Mob Rules

Kill the spirit and you'll be blinded, the end is always the same
Play with fire, you burn your fingers and lose your hold of the flame, oh

It's over, it's done
The end is begun
If you listen to fools
The Mob Rules

You've nothing to say
Oh, they're breaking away
If you listen to fools

Break the circle and stop the movement, the wheel is thrown to the ground
Just remember it might start rolling and take you right back around

You're all fools!
The Mob Rules!

General CommentDoubtful, since mobs are generally very unstructured units. It seems to me like it's about how people ignore their individuality and their own personal beliefs when they're in a mob, and how people will just join mobs whenever one shows up regardless of what that mob is going to do. A "mob mentality", if you will.

General CommentGreat music, but I dislike the loser lyrics.

People who feel powerless wished mobs ruled, cause, as part of a mob, they could have some power.

But the mob does not rule. A mob can certainly do some damage if people gets out of control, but most of the time the people are under control. And being under control is what people really dislike...so they have escapist music, movies, etc.

This dislike of being controlled at the very core of rock, metal, rap, punk, etc. It's all about sticking it to the man. And what better way than a mob!

General CommentThis was a great song for the animated film "Heavy Metal".
While not one of the "deepest" songs ever done by Sabbath, it is a very cool song nevertheless.

General CommentI'm not sure, but the second verse,

    Its over, its done
    the end, the big death
    if you listen to fools
    the mob rules...

    Sounds like hes saying,

    its over, its done
    the end has degun
    if you listen to fools
    the mob rules...

    I could be wrong.

General CommentSabbath produced some brilliant music with Dio.
This is the best example in my opinion.

General CommentThe song refers to the ignorant people who believe that structures like the government rules. Its the mob that rules. All of the lyrics leading up to the main line are the words of those who believe the government rules but then Dio proclaims "If you listen to fools. The mob rules." This is very true considering under many type of government its is the people(the mob, majority) that really controls everything. Unfortunatley most people take it as if one actually listens to fools the mob will rule when the mob is actually already in power.

Song MeaningLet him who hath undertstanding recon the meaning of the song. It's meaning is beware the great deciever ( SATAN, Anti-Christ, The Mourning Star, or Lucifer ) . Even when you think you have been serving the dark lord he is by definition " the ANTI-GOD" his only power is to deceive, lie and hate ( as God's powers, post-first testament are LOVE, FORGIVENESS, and Sacrafice). The last two lines tell you this simple message , " YOUR ALL FOOLS, THE MOB RULES.

Song MeaningI believe the lyrics are a clever way of saying that those who remain silent, do nothing, are not proactive, or do not think for themselves, are subject to the outcome of the beliefs of the status quo. In this case the status quo ('fools') have already doomed themselves to the 'death and darkness' approaching the 'wall' of the 'city'. If 'you've nothing to say' and don't react to the situation then the walls will be 'breaking away'. Those that 'kill the spirit' of responding properly to the situation because confrontation is involved ('you burn your fingers') have given up without a fight ('it's over, it's done'). If you 'break the circle and stop the movement' (the doomed belief) then there is a chance of defeating the problem at hand. 'It might start rolling and take you right back around' if you are not constantly on guard against and vigilant to the beliefs of the status quo.
