"Lonely Is The Word" as written by and Terence Butler Ronnie James Dio....
It's a long way to nowhere
And I'm leaving very soon
On the way we pass so close
To the back side of the moon
Hey join the traveler if you got nowhere to go
Hang your head and take my hand
It's the only road I know
Oh, lonely is the word, yeah yeah yeah

I've been higher than stardust
I've been seen upon the sun
I used to count in millions then
But now I only count in one
Come on, join the traveler
If you got nowhere to go
Hang your head and take my hand
It's the only road I know
Yeah, lonely is the word
Got to be the saddest song I ever heard

Yeah, lonely is the name
Maybe life's a losing game

General CommentEasily Sabbath's most underatted song IMO although its tough to be noticed on such a killer album with songs like children of the sea, Neon Kights, heaven and hell and die young. Dio vocals are just stunning. the lines "Yeah, lonely its the name, Maybe life's a losing game?" are almost as spectacular as "I see a rainbow rising" from stargazer

This song to me (not necessarily what it means) is about losing everything, whether it be a relationship or friendship and feeling like you have to go through everything alone and you feel like your going nowhere.

General CommentHas anyone else noticed that near the end is a rip-off of Stairway to Heaven?

General CommentI guess this is about feeling lonely and not having anywhere to go. It seems like the person once had it all and now has nothing. My favorite dio-sabbath song. "Lonely is the name, mabey life's a losing game" is my favorite line ever, and i don't hear anything relating to stairway to heaven

General CommentTo even utter such words as "Stairway to Heaven" in the same sentence as Sabbath makes my skin crawl. Nothing even compares to Sabbath and Sabbath has their own style. Zepplin was a "wanna be".

Great Sabbath song as he is... the Metal Lord.

This song hits me hard as I had the opportunity to meet what I thought was my future and I lost it all.

General CommentHonestly yeah the keyboard at the end sounds like Robert Plants screams in the middle of Stairway. However, when I play this song for people who have never heard it and are familiar with classic rock and/or metal I compare the guitar solo at the end and tell people that in my opinion it actually rivals Stairway To Heaven as one the greatest solos, not just in metal but PERIOD!!Definitely Tony Iommi's best work.Am I the only one who noticed how much better Sabbath got as musicians when Dio joined the band?Don't get me wrong,Ozzy is their best frontman, but their playing was very basic three chord riffs. As good as they were I think Dio gave them a much needed kick in the ass and really brought out the best in their style.I hope they make another album together now that Dio rejoined them under the Heaven & Hell moniker.

General Comment I think this song might be about "the traveler" from star trek.. or its at least inspired by him.
