I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
I was caught in excitement, an unusual spell
It's curling your sense and I'm strapped for my lines
And we talk a lot, the trap you gave in focus
Tales of the tour and a hardcore life
Were matched by the popstar call to remind
That we talk a lot, and soon it will come into focus
There's no time for fighting, any sex is personal
Information not appealing to really any sense at all
Is it wrong to think I'm a traditional man?
I hope I'd be up for an exitional plan
Yeah, a part of me could deal with these open connections
But the concept to me is like "yes," typical
It's like "here's how it happens," baby, do you like how we planned it?
We should talk a lot, and soon we came into focus
(That's right, she focused, that's right)
There's no time for fighting, any sex is personal
Keep your head above the meaning, and devotion doesn't swell
Any sexual encounter adds an awful twisting touch
It's like standing in the nineties, but getting used to this is hard
There's no time for fighting, any sex is personal
Keep your head above the meaning, and devotion doesn't swell
Any sexual encounter adds an awful twisting touch
It's like standing in the nineties, but getting used to this is hard
It's curling your sense and I'm strapped for my lines

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

I wonder what he yells out between ""...and soon in it would come into focus..." and "...theres no time for fighting..."? to me it sounds like "that's right, to fart face that's right! BONUS!"
